either one will work, but the red box is easier to access.

i put mine in that fuse box under the hood by the battery. there is a bolt there where you can hook a wire to and all youll have to do is put a fuse in the empty slot. ill go take a picture of a truck at lunch to show you where it is. in my opinion it looks 100 times cleaner because you cant see the wire because it is covered by the black cover and it comes out right there where you stick it into the cab.

heres some pictures. the first one is of my uncles 05 silverado. it has the smaller fuses in it. the thing circled is just a plug. take that out and get you a fuse the size you want and put in there. if you take that black cover off theres a stud in there with a nut on it. its not used for anything on a gas truck so you can just bolt your + cable on there.

these next 2 pictures are out of a duramax thats why there is a fuse in the slot. this is what the 99-02 trucks fuse box looks like i believe.

This will work ok for small amps, but if you are using anything bigger than 10 guage I would recommend running the power to the battery (not the fuse box or red jump box) as larger amps will draw a lot of current. Remember, the fuse box is only fed by a single 8 guage cable running all your factory accessories. If you're running 4 guage to an 8 guage feed you are wasting your money and causing current issues. Also the red box is running from a 4 guage feed off the battery and you are introducing multiple connections between your amp and the battery.

Going to the battery is always the best option, but you can get away with others sometimes.
