Default My Project Car 70 Mustang - "Defector"

A few weeks ago I finally started tearing down my 70 mustang and restoring it again. I am building the car for mainly the street but hopefully a 10-11 sec drag car. I bought the car about 13 years ago from the orginal owner and restored it once, but I was only 17 so I was not as smart as I am today so i thought I would give it another try.

This is what it looked like before when i pulled into my garage.

These picture show my homemade frame/body leveler. The entire car is level and square, which was kinda hard for me to believe but as luck has it, it was never wrecked. Anyways gotta start with the car being level during this first stage so I can add/build some custom rear cross member, sub-frames, roll cage (8-point), minitub, floorpans and recessed firewall.

Oh and I plan on this Mustang to be LS1 powered with a 6 speed. I am trying to think of a name to call this build so next month we I meet with a graphic design artist to make me some renderings I will have a name.

It does not look like much now, but you gotta start somewhere...

Currently I am thinking of calling it "Defector" , since it will be a ford powered by Chevy, what do yall think?

I used to own a 70 fastback and one thing I would highly recommend since you've got the chassis stripped is to weld in a shock tower reinforcement kit to it. This is one of the weakest links in the framework of these cars. Even if you don't plan on putting any kind of suspension on it, this will help keep it together. I went through a couple of towers just dragracing it with a low 13 sec powerplant. Once they crack, they're gone and the suspension alignment will always be going out. Here's a place that sells a kit but you can dig around to see who still sells them.

Yep I have been threw 2 shock towers as well over the years, so they are going to be gone. I am going to a Mustang II front end by Heidt's ( LINK )so I don't have to deal with them any more.

Plus and plan on adding some bars to attach the front frame rails to the firewall. I will also be extending the front subframes all the way back to a rear crossmember that also connects out to the rear subframes. It is turning out to be be a fun project, something that I have been planning and researching for many years, but now parts are readily available.

69/70 is my favorite mustang. I have a 69 mach1 I was going to build but now just sits under the tractor shed. I'm thinking about selling it back to the prvious owner. it has a cage, sheetmetal interior, narrowed subframe, and mustang II front end.
