i bought some airplane paint remover to strip my wheels of oem clear coat, then sanded them myself to roughen the surface. i took them to this guy who i was recommended. he has a big contract with a big chain grocery store in texas and takes in side jobs for extra cash not that he needs it but to help out folks with projects. he appreciated the work i did on the wheel prepping and said he would still sandblast to make sure they were good to powdercoat them. he charged me $100 for my wife's 2010 5 oem jeep wheels (including the spare) and later $135 for the 4 wheels for my 01 gmc presently undergoing a makeover. hell i appreciate the good prices he has given me.

my wheels are semi gloss.

i love those centerlines and regret selling mine a couple of months ago but i needed the money at the time. i was going to originally powdercoat them black as i love the centerlines but after over 25 years of having polished wheels and having to polish them, i was definitely sure i wanted easy to clean and stealthly looking black powdercoated wheels. so its all up to you.

These are my favorite wheels and I've never seen them powdercoated black.

If I can find some plastidip locally I will paint them up. I'll try home depot again on the off chance they have some. I don't know why they're not carrying it any more. The lady at the store said its almost always sold out so that doesn't make any sense.

Yeah, so I got an email back from the powder coater guys.

Here's what I said:
Hello. I'm interested in having my wheels powder coated black. They're aluminum centerline wheels.

I'd like some advice. I don't want a high gloss wheel so I'm thinking satin or semi gloss. I have read where some one recommended going with a flat black base and then a gloss top coat for the correct look. What would you recommend?
His reply:
Usually in this case people go with the matte black. I will atach a picture of a wheel in this color and you can see if it will work. The wheel is rough but you can get the idea. Cost would be $35 each

Well I just went to the Home Depot in the next town over. They had ONE CAN of plastidip. I'll clean up a wheel and plastidip it today. Hopefully it'll be warm enough today.

First I washed it.

Then I gave it a once over with rubbing alcohol and masked it.

Then I sprayed it.

That's only the first coat and it's still wet. The instructions say to wait 30 minutes between coats. I'm going to add 2 or 3 more coats. I didn't do a stellar job of getting the wheel clean since this is only temporary and just to give me an idea of a black rim.

I think it looks pretty rad. What do you guys think?

Well I got a little impatient. I checked in it half an hour after I sprayed the first coat and it wasn't quite dry. So I set the wheel upright and placed a ceramic heater in front of it.

This happened.

What I think happened is some of the rubbing acolohol or water was stuck behind the centerline cap and it escaped when the wheel went vertical.

Oh well, I'm only doing this to see if I like them black or not. I really think I'm diggin the black.

I'd like to go with black lug nuts. I haven't researched it at all though. Does anyone happen to know where to buy them or even what size the thread is on our trucks?

Lookin good!
