Thanks
Yes, I sprayed the outside of my stock tail lights. I taped off the reverse signal light part (obviously). Yes, it covers the yellow signal part. It is Testor's Candy Apple Red paint in a spray can that I got from a local hobby store. If you are going to do this take your time and have a lot of patience. I had a week off and did this over 3 days. I cleaned them up, sanded with fine grit sandpaper and added 3 or 4 coats. I let each coat dry for awhile, maybe about 8-10 hours, then sanded and sprayed another 3 coats of clear coat on it. Then wet sand, polish and you're good to go!
Do light coats until you reach your desired darkness. I think I'm going to add a coat or 2. I have an extra 3 or 4 sets that I'm going to completely do and try a transparent black(smoked) color.

Nice! I bought myself a 150 psi/32 gallon compressor last summer. I use it all the time.

On your tails, it's been awhile since I looked at the back of them but is there a way to seperate the lens from the housing to remove the amber section? Does the amber section show up darker or lighter? Did you get much of a raised lip when you taped off the back up light or did it go away with some sanding? I might candy my tails and take them down and have them professionally clear coated. Also, what grit sand paper did you use to prep the tails for the candy color?

You know what, I'm not sure about removing the lens from the housing. I would imagine it being too fragile to take apart, I'll check an extra set I have this weekend. About your question about the amber section showing up lighter or darker, I'm assuming you mean with the paint on the tails, does the amber section of the tail light show up darker or lighter than the rest of the tail light? If so then no, but I think I'm going to add another coat or 2 because when the sunlight hits it at a certain angle, you can still see a hint of amber. I will paint the whole thing obviously so that it isn't darker
About the raised lip, yes the reverse light section dips a little lower than the rest of the tail light for the obvious reason that the tape displaced that space where the paint would be. We're talking millimeters here though. Nothing some sanding wouldn't fix I think.
As far as the sand paper grit number, I think I used 220 first and then something higher. Once you're all done with the painting, get some fine grit wet sand paper and a spray bottle with water and wet sand the tails. Then polish them with whatever you use to polish your truck. They should come out looking kick ***

Chingon, one more thing, How well does the lights show up through the paint? Is it as bad as the ol tail light covers. Just wondering if it will be another reason to get pulled over with all the barney fifes round here.

Thanks for the information! I think I might just do this once my 86 is finished in the next week or so. I won't be in a hurry because the truck will be off the road. Do you happen to have a part number or paint number for the Testors red that you used? Also, how bad did that 220 grit rip through that plastic on the lens?
