well, i went to dallas to pick up a bed cover and the guy i was getting it from got stuck in the mud. i tried to help get him out and got some scratches in the paint, on top of that i need to prep the bed cover. so here are the Q's

1. how do i remove light scratches?

2. how do i prep painted fuberglass for paint, it has small pits and clear coat coming off?

3. should i try and paint it (i feel pretty comfortable with paint), and if i screw it up how hard to reprep it for a professional job?

on fiberglass i usually just sand to a dull finish then repaint and reclear. has worked good on my old camper shell and several other things....

 

thanks, i need to figure out what im gonna do with the small dips in the fiberglass. you can see where it dips and pits in places. would a high build primer work for that?

 

possibly. if not then it might be bondo time....

 

This is how I would repair all of your problems.

1. Most scratches require primer. If you just feather it out you will be able to see where it was. I would feather all the scratches out, do 3 coats of primer starting just where the scratch was contained and and by the third coat be 4-5 inches past the scratch. Sand the primer down with 320 and your ready to go, for the rest of the area thats getting painted and not primed I would use 800 and water.

2. Same concept. The peeling clear has to be feathered and primed or it will not look good when painted. Do the same proccess as in problem 1. As for the pits, i would get red pudy and dab it in where the pits are and sand it down smooth, i believe the red puddy is call nitrostain. but be sure and let it dry fast enough.

I know all this stuff bc I have been painted autos since I was 14 years old and have been PPG ceritfied for years.
