Need help.....want to know how to prep a TPO (Thermoplastic polyolefin) bumper for maximum adhesion?

1. wash item with a mild detergent
2. wet sand to my desired smoothness
3. spot putty a few gouges/fill, sand, smooth
4. wash item with a mild detergent
5. wash item with a wax and grease remover
6. apply Adhesion Promoter
7. apply primer
8. fix defects missed earlier that now show with a primer coat/this step would include another washing; wet sand to scuff the primer coat
9. apply color
10. apply clear

 

11 wet sand again if needed
12 buff/finish for the final time, wax.

Seems you gots a pretty good idea of what to do. Prep is key to painted, runs in paint and clear, can be dealt with after.. I would also add some type or get a paint made for bumpers( as it will have a flex additive, that will keep from flaking or cracking if flexed). You can X the first step, just start sanding.. Wet sanding will take longer then dry sanding, you do not want the surface totally smooth. It should be a little bit ruff, so the promoter has something to bite into.. I am prob leaving something out, but you seem to have it..

 

When washing before and after sanding use scalding hot water to wash and rinse as it will help release oils from mold that were used as a release agent.

 

Nice tips. Should be re-painting my grille and lower valance this weekend.

I have adhesion promoter that says clear primer
Do u still need to primer I would think you would?
