Looking to get a cast aluminum piece powdercoated and it is flat with raised ribs on it. I want the the piece coated black with the ribs being a machined/brushed look. Should I just have it powdercoated then block sand the coating off of the high spots or should they be taped off prior to coating?

Just got off the phone a local powdercoater, he said he'd PC the whole part and that I should block sand the raised section to remove the coating. I was worried that it would peel at the edge of where I sand, but he said it wouldn't..... Thoughts?

I'm not sure exactly. Dunno why it wouldn't work, but I've wondered the same thing for a while. I've thought about doing that with painted stuff, not powdercoated though. Someone who knows their stuff will be along soon enough...

Powdercoating isn't going to flake off like cheap/poorly prepped paint will. If it does, it wasn't applied right. As long as the coating is quality work, sanding it off will work just fine.

I would however block it nice and smooth first, so all you will need to do after is work it a lil bit....
