My wife has been wanting something that sits high and fairly economical 20+ mpg. We have been looking at all sorts of stuff, big and small. I nearly bought a 99 454 4x4 suburban from a friend, but there would be nothing close to economic about it.
This ride caught my eye and I didn't want to pass up. The previous owner said he got 21 mpg city and 26 hwy, based on my past experience with these I believe him. It has a new injector pump, new injectors, new glow plugs, new a/c compressor, and a fresh transmission that was built for pulling.
He was the original owner and owned a brake and alignment shop. It stops on a dime and drives straight and true just as it should. The drivers seat shows age ( seams fraying badly), but the middle seat was kept folded down and the third seat was kept in a barn.
Tomorrow it will receive new shocks, new tires, a set of wheels I found this morning, and new exhaust. A new windshield within a week. Should be a pretty sweet ride.
The rust around the bottom should be repaired within the month. I have already talked to someone about it.

I know what some will say, but this is what my wife and I wanted. We were looking for an 87-92 suburban with a diesel primarily. She loves this body style suburban and I love the economy of the diesel engine. I can also pull my 16 ft car trailer and take the whole family along again.

2wd, it really hard to find them that aren't completely rusted out. I felt pretty lucky to find this one.

We got alot done today. It now has no mufflers, and new shoes.
We went all over the truck, found no leaks, no damage, and only mild rust in the one quarter panel and rocker panel.
We gave it an oil change, and put in new shocks. It had help spring shocks in the rear; when we took them out, the rear started sagging. I added some 1 inch lift blocks to it for the time being. The rear still sags a little, but I can live with the little.
It rides and drive like a new truck now. I am pretty happy with it.
The tires are Yokahama Geolander H/T-S P265/70R15 (P235/75R15 stock), on factory wheels off a 90 Chevy suburban. I put my GMC center caps on them.

We also took of the angle cut exhaust tips that stuck out way past the body and put on some rolled tips.
Tomorrow it get the a/c charged and a new steering stabilizer.
P.S. - thats my blue 83 malibu wagon in the background of one pic, and the my 82 cutlass in the other

diesel !! ! . . . the body will rust out before the engine gives out!
We had one of those growing up . . . the trans gives up, and the rear, but the engine never gave up. I'd replace the oil pump, keep a spare set of fuel filters in the cab. Teach her how to "flush" the filter out when it gets too much water in it. The spare tire well will fill up with water sometimes.
Enjoy the black smoke when you stomp on it . . . it's great for tail gaters !

This truck runs great, no black smoke when you stomp it, bone stock engine, not even the injector pump turn up. You can barely even tell it's a diesel.
It maintains great oil pressure, steady 45 lbs all day long. the windows do not leak and it never had a roof rack, so no water inside.
I doubt she will ever have to worry with the water issue.
The last one we had, the body started rusting badly. We sent it on to someone else.
This one the floors are solid without even a speck of rust.

Good luck with the "new" ride, it looks pretty straight
