Default Can someone explain truck suspension to me?

OK, excuse my ignorance but I'm just familiar with F-body suspsension. I just changed the Springs (struts in front) and springs and shocks in the back on my old Z28. What all is involved in lowering a truck 2/4? Single cab Silverado for an example. I hear about spindles, coil springs, leaf springs, etc. etc. etc. What is necessary though? Do you have to have a spring compressor like you do on f-body's? Can an average mechanically skilled person do it with a lift? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
