Default K&n oil filters

Can anyone explain to me why my 2014 Sierra 5.3 call for a smaller K&N oil filter (hp-1017) than what is recommended for a 2014 Silverado 5.3. (Hp-2011)

The HP-2011 is significantly larger than the 1017.

I called K&n customer support for clarification and the woman was no help. She could only confirm that the two trucks, (same year, same motor) take different oil filters.
I'm scratching my head.
There appears to be no issue with clearance using the longer filter on the gmc.

It could come down to what packages each truck specifically came with and certainengine features. I cant specifically answer your question but sometimes different oil filters are spec'd based on if a vehicle came equipped with skid plates or not. Also if the company came out with an updated oil filter that better suited certain year engines, some books will list the older filter for the same engine a newer book lists a new filter.

When you say larger, is the diameter of the filter/seal larger or just a taller filter? If they are equal in diameter and the threads are the same on the oil filter base technically you could use either. When the filters for the 99-07c trucks changed from a tall style to a short style you could still purchase a filter for (i want to say it was a early 2000s vette) as it was the same diameter and threads as the old truck filter, rather than using the new redesigned shorter truck filter. Either way, I wouldn't put too much concern into it.

I was using the product selector on K&N's website.
The website recommends a HP-2011 oil filter for 2014- Silverado-1500-5.3

It recommends a HP-1017 for a 2014-GMC-Sierra-1500-5.3

The filters are identical except the HP-2011 is about 1"-1.5" taller.

On mobilone's website, the same scenario calls for the same filter.
I will be using the HP-2011 filter in my GMC And adding an extra 1/2 quart.

If the threads are the same and the gasket diameter is the same and will fit the sealing flange like its supposed to i would put much thought into it either. A bigger filter does allow a little oil into circulation though.

Just like the older Gen III 5.3s, both a Fram PH3675 and a Fram 3600 will work. I like the 3675 simply because it is a bigger filter.
