I've seen plenty of ext cabs with allum drive shafts.

I believe a lot of the z71s came with the allum ones.

I had a 98 ext cab 2500 4x4, it had a 4L80 with a one piece aluminum driveshaft. All the nbs trucks I have seen with ext cab have 2 piece steel, but I'm sure they put all kinds in them.

Depends on what the truck is set-up for I think. If it's for towing I think they put the Aluminum ones in there since they are better for high torque, if it's for loading and off-roading or the sport versions I think they put the steel. This is all my opinion, not sure on what really determines what and why they choose which ones for what applications.
