I was getting ready to go out for some good racing and came up on a dodge with what i thought was just exhaust. So im thinking not worth the gas. I pull up next to him and he is looking like he wants to race so i figure what the hell. We are rolling and about 30 and he hammers it and i follow up. It was a perfect launch for me and his seemed a little strong for a 5.9 Ram. I pulled about a half a car at the launch and was slowly pulling away until about 90 when he had to pull in behind me because of another car in his lane. At the finish I had over a car on him and still pulling. He followed me for a while so i pulled in a parking lot and talked to him. He said he had a cam headers, Intake, and exhaust. Which would explain why i only pulled that much on him. But i am not impressed with the hp output on those 5.9l. I only have the 4.8 which is not alot.

 

ya... those motors need some serious tuning...doesnt quite stand up stock for stock to our 6.0l motors.

 

Yeah those old 5.9s didnt have much power. Hard to believe one with a cam, headers and intake got beat though. Are you stock? With all the threads about 4.8 wins I think I made the wrong purchase with my dodge...I wonder if i can get a 4.8 dropped in place of my diesel.

 

The old 5.9 was a work horse, but it sure wasn't fast. My old 98 ram ss/t with the mopar computer and a CAI could only luster a 15.7@86mph That said, you can get all the mopar goodies for them and turn them into 14 and even 13 second trucks if you got the cash. The hemi was a much needed replacement. The difference when hauling between the two is night and day. With 1200lb's of dirt in the box, my hemi is still as fast as my old 5.9 was empty.

 

I will admitt that the 5.9L needs alot of mods to keep up!!!!!$$$$$$$

 

i think tehy have real fun low end torqe but dont pull strong in the top end.

 

my buddys 02 360 with intake cat-back and hypertech couldnt even touch my truck stock with a 16.1 . i had it for two weeks , after i got 900 miles on (lot of driving because i was happy and had to go everywhere) i changed my oil and we ran

ive seen stock cummins dodges run 17's and a best of 16.8 in one . i know they can fly with mods but stock there not the quickest .

also my buddy has a 98 ram extended cab with a 5.2 , intake , no cat , magnaflow exhuast and he couldnt beat my old truck which was a 94 v6 tbi silverado . he also ran a 17.9 with no spin at all . i know his tranny is slipping bad now but when he wasnt my old truck still got him bad
