I have been around the supra community, and the worst mistake guys make is insisting on having the six speed manual tranny and then screwing up the combo with a huge turbo (T76 or bigger). This makes for a big laggy turd that won't leave the line with boost, then boils the tires off once it hits boost for 1000 rpm worth of power, then the tranny is shifted and the turbo falls flat because the RPM wasn't kept up....

The key to a fast supra or turbo 2JZ vehicle is medium sized turbo (T62-T76) while running an auto tranny like a 4L80e with a 3k-3.5k stall... Load, load, load!

The dyno queens suck at everything but peak numbers... Having a turbo supra engine that spools up and starts pulling at 3,500 and keeps going til well past 7,500, that is something to behold in a street machine.

I have been in an 800whp auto supra that was an absolute monster on the street and strip... It ran away from 650-700 whp vettes and camaros from a roll at 60+

Good luck with the build jzzz, I will be watching for great things!!

(If the 3.0l had more torque down low, I would have swapped one into my Landcruiser!)

Thanks for the advice.

Yeah I really want to try and get the truck running with the 5-speed R-154 tranny. If it falls on its face I'll go the auto route.

My set up will not be very laggy. Initial turbo on the set up will be one I already have. It's a precision 6265 ball bearing and I plan to use a log style manifold.

That R-154 should be fine with a 6265 as long as You have the right diff gearing for your power curve and You can keep the R-154 alive...

What is the stock diff gear ratio in your truck?

What are Your cheap and easy gearing options for later?

What ECM are you going to run for the engine?

If you go to auto tranny ever, look for the GM tranny adapter and a 4L80E with a 3,000-3,500 stall

Yeah you def what you are talking about. Thanks

I know I will be pushing the R-154 tranny, but just want to work out the bugs in this swap first before I start dumping money in drive train.

Right now I have a rebuilt 8.8 rear with LSD and 3.73 gears.
This was the cheapest and easiest option at the time. I would change the gear ratio to suit the power ratio, but this rear will have to last until I can afford a custom built one.

I have looked at the Chevy adapters for 2jz.

My real goal is to have the swap done and have fun despite power. After college this will become my race truck and def get an auto.

those 3.73's should work fine to load that engine/turbo combination good enough to build boost well. Keep it south of 400whp and You should be fine for awhile. I wouldn't put too strong of a clutch in it. Use the clutch as your "torque-fuse" per se, so the clutch is sacrificed before the tranny and don't be speed shifting it!!!

You can have a lot of fun with that truck with 350-400whp for sure!

Yeah it really all depends on when the truck is finished. If I'm out of college and have another nice daily then I will turn this into a track racer.

Btw I'm running AEM standalone.

I don't see why everyone is against the 6speeds though...I looked at one the other day guy has a 76mm turbo, small shot of gas, and 6 speed, runs consistent 8.5 1/4 et. This is also with almost stock suspension.

Very cool, AEM is a known winner with a 2JZ...

As for the six speed, not at all against, but, the cost is very high and the manual tranny turbo cars of that level usually aren't as fast as the automatics with a proper stall converter that keeps them in the thick part of the power band the whole time... With a standard tranny and a really big turbo, You basically have to slip the clutch between shifts and keep your foot on the gas, otherwise, You lose to much turbine speed and the turbo falls flat...
