4bt weights in around 900# dry...

The turbo is the stock holset h1c... it will soon be either hx35 or hx40 holset over an hx30 holset... got the hx30w on the way... should be here this week. What that will mean is full boost under 1500rpm... highway boost will be around 20psi so the power will always be there... with the hx35... peak would be around 35-40... with the hx40... peak boost would be 50+ which would mean head studs and a few other things... debating on what I want to do there.

As for the tach... I will have it working soon. I'm working on mounting the stock cps tone ring onto the crank pulley and using the stock cps to drive the tach.

All the other stock gauges currently work... need to get the tach working though so the ecu will realize the engine is running and allow a few things to function properly.

I'm really hopeful on getting the 80e finished and start putting it in this weekend... we'll see

Soon... I'll be driving for nearly free... and so far including the tranny build... I've got less then 7k in the swap.

If I spent 10k on it... I will make that back in 30k miles with just fuel savings... running W80 ftw!

More on that later
I don't see a chance of the swap paying for it's self. Especialy since you are now working to upgrade the turbo and whatnot.
Even if you are going to be running bio-diesel i would assume you will have atleast a few grand in the set up. Bio-diesel is a great way to go but takes a while to recoupe your investment.

The swap is awesome! How does the 60 drive at 3000 and below rpm?

Default Inspection Issues

Cool project. How do you think getting it inspected will go?

Thankfully I live in a state where inspection isn't required.

The 60e is toast... Ive killed 2 in less then 2k miles... destroyed the pump in the first one and I think I killed the lockup clutch in this one... but it drove the same really... I didn't change gears or tire size since the gas burner so its still turning the same rpm as before.. it just doesn't turn over 3200rpm. The trans that is still in the truck still pulls and drives... but its been over 240 degrees multiple times and the lock up clutch no longer holds... when its cold.. the converter will still lock and the truck will easily run 80+ on the interstate... but once the trans gets warm, the converter wont hold lock-up and temps skyrocket... max speed quickly drops to 70 pegged.. its not pretty. lol

As far as the fuel source... not running biodiesel... I'm running W80 which is 80% waste motor oil and 20% gasoline or kerosene. The waste oil is free and so is the stale gasoline I typically use. My processing system I've already built and only have $200-300 in... works well and allows me to process 50 gallons at a time.

The engine only has 60k miles on it so it isn't even broken in... the trans will be new... the Tahoe is plenty big for a family and can tow anything I'll need it to... so if my estimate of 30k miles not paying off 10,000 invested which I'm well under still.. then 100k miles... 200k miles... it'll pay for itself more then once.

My turbo upgrades are rather inexpensive too... holset hx35 is on a couple billion 5.9 cummins engines... one can be had for $200 in good shape... the hx30 was a little harder to come by but was still only $390 and it was rebuilt. My cost figures incorporated the costs of my upgrades because I planned to do it from the start.

Let say I run diesel fuel instead of my own fuel... and on a low side, average 18mpg... with diesel fuel at $4.00 and gasoline at $3.75

11mpg average with the 5.3 would mean it would cost $34 to drive 100 miles.

On diesel fuel... at 18mpg which would be low... it would cost $23 to drive 100 miles... so $11 every 100 miles... $110 every 1000... $1100 every 10,000 miles... $11,000 every 100,000 miles... based on that and the lifespan of this engine... it should not only pay for itself in its lifetime.. but should put money back in my pocket and since I'm only 25.. I've got time

No matter how I figure it... it will EVENTUALLY pay for itself... lol Atleast that's what I told the wife and I believe it myself.... but we'll see in the long run.

If I get time tonight... I'll post up more pics of my fuel processing station and of the progress on the tranny build... we'll see.

Hopefully I can get someone to chime in on my clutch pack questions in the drivetrain section

Thanks guys
-Chris

Here is my WMO processing setup...

This is my transport rig... I use a modified SBC oil pump that I run with a 1/2" drill... works nicely

Gravity feed from the settle drum (which settles for a minimum of 48hrs.. typically longer)

And filtered through these... down to 2 micron (keep in mind the typical diesel fuel filter only filters to 15 micron)

So far... Ive ran it blended 50/50 with diesel fuel in the stock Tahoe tank which it ran good but its smoked more then I liked and I was only driving short trips... so I changed my plans...

I picked up some fuel switching valves from greasecar and I will be running a 25 gallon fuel cell in place of the spare tire (its kinda useless at this point anyways due to its size)... I also have a coolant based heat exchanger to heat the fuel and once the engine is at operating temp, I'll switch over to 100% W80... I will always be starting and shutting down on straight diesel fuel to keep from having issues with coking rings/injectors.. but it should work nicely.

Also... with 25 gallons of W80 in the fuel cell and 26 gallons of pump diesel in the stock tank... that's a 1000+ mile range on one fill up at my target 20mpg..

Anyways... back to the truck...

I'm a bit further now... but don't have pics uploaded yet. Still waiting on confirmation that my direct clutch pack is setup properly and then the internals of the case will be done. Hoping to build the pump and valvebody in the next 2 days and have it ready to go in the truck by Saturday.

Almost forgot... my other goody...

Hughes Billet converter... 1200rpm stall and single lock up clutch. Hughes was the only company that I could find making a performance based converter for a 4l80e backing a diesel. Hopefully I like the low stall... we'll see.

Anyways... that's all for now.
