New Guy, Fairly new truck, old problems
#1
I've been through two 4L60E trannys in 70K and after 1K miles the third is crapping out. I hope this forum can give me some insight that I need to do battle with the upcoming business deals. I'm off to transmission land.

These trannys didn't break, they burned out. Both under warranty. Both replaced with GM reman. units.
I'm running with the 5.3, K&N air intake, Flowmaster Muscletruck 40 series, Superchips Max Microtuner set up for 91+ octane performance, slightly lowered shift points, slightly raised shift pressures, 29.5 tires ( Kumhos). The truck screws. I love it! I drive it "spirited", but with respect for mechanical limits.
I believe the problems I'm having are electrical, or computer oriented. I'm not up to speed on all the inputs that govern the behavior of these trannys, but I think I could get a little more life from one.
So this week I installed a Summit aluminum deep pan, tapped it first for an Autometer gauge, and replaced the little air cooler up front with a Perma-cool 30K unit.
What a shock to see the temps I'm reaching! After 20-30 minutes of putting around town at 40-45 mph in 40 degree ambient temps. I'm up @ 250 degrees! The fluid IS circulating through both coolers. I just don't know. I've got no codes to show.
I came over here to ask about other similar experiences. Can the transfer case cause any heat issues? I've had no problems with 4wd. Any and all input will be helpful.
I never owned automatics before, but decided to get a "nicer" truck this time.
Man, I miss my '72 Custom 20 camper special!
Oh yeah, the tranny in my truck now has @1100 miles on it. At three grand the tranny loses grip and slips. Engine revs, I lift and it shifts up firm and fine. WTF?

Occasionally I want to tow this to the track.

Transfer case won't cause issues. If you're hitting 250 there is definitely a problem. You shouldn't really see anything higher than 230, and I think normal operating temps are closer to 200. Sounds like your clutches are either slipping badly, or you have something clogging your lines somewhere. Rebuilt trannies should have new pressure control solenoids, so I can't see that being a problem.
Personally, I would get it replaced one more time, get your new trans home in the truck and pull it out and sell it. Then take the $$ and go to FLT and get yourself a mildly built trans.
