They WERE all automatics. 4L60E's to be exact.

You won't need FI to blow your tranny, or even a 5.3 or 6.0 for that matter.

The most common problem is burning up bands and clutches. The best way to protect against this without spending a ton of money is to get a good tranny cooler, and look into getting a shift kit and servo. The "silky-smooth" shifts that the manufacturers rave about happen because the bands and clutches apply slowly, allowing them to slip. This helps smooth out the shifts, but when you start putting additional power through the trans it helps burn up the soft parts faster. The shift kit and servo will firm up and quicken the shifts, reducing wear on the soft parts. If your motor is stock you are much less likely to run into problems, but it's still possible. For all the great things GM has done, their 4L60E tranny is still a piece of junk. A good tranny cooler is essential, heat is the enemy in these transmissions. If I were running a stock drivetrain, I would definitely put in a good cooler. I would look into a shift kit and servo. If you have enough $$ to do it, it is well worth it.

The next most common thing I would say is broken sun shells and planetary gear sets. The stock sun shell is pretty thin, and likes to break when you put lots of power through it. For a stock motor though, I wouldn't worry about breaking hard parts.

As for repair bills....I am on my 3rd 4L60E. My first one burned up the 2-4 band. Cost me $2300 to have it rebuilt with a shift kit, servo, and some new performance parts. My second one broke the parking gear and sent metal shavings through the entire trans. Cost me $3400 to have it rebuilt with high-strength hard parts, a rebuilt converter, performance clutches, etc etc. You will find many other members on here that have been through several trannies. Again, with a stock motor you probably won't have to worry about it, but I wouldn't promise that there won't be problems.

Preventative upgrades are much much cheaper than rebuilds.

Wow, well I'll be careful, if this happens to one of my friends with GM trucks I'll really look into this.
