Default What are these tapped holes for?

So I was installing my cam in my 6.0 block tonight, and noticed a couple tapped holes above my crank in the block. I thought they weren't in my 5.3, so I double checked, and sure enough they are not there. My 5.3 is a 2005, and my 6.0 is a 1999.

There is nothing wrong with deciding to use the hard style damper; actually it’s a pretty good idea. Just stay away from the spring-loaded chain tensioner that is installed on most vehicles, as it has a tendency to fail and come apart. The thing you will have to check is the bolt hole spacing to get the appropriate damper, as there was a running design change from the earlier LS6 style to the later LS2 style. As far as I’m aware GM no longer stocks the LS6 style, but they are available in the aftermarket. GM used to supply a template for drilling and tapping the bolt holes in blocks that weren’t factory drilled when purchasing the LS6 style through GM Performance Parts. The template is not included with the newer LS2 style damper. For people that have engines equipped with the spring-loaded tensioner, the LS2 style damper has the same bolt spacing and is a direct fit.

My understanding is they have been discontinued for a while, but that may be incorrect or there may just be new old stock parts out there that are still available. Whatever the case; good deal that you were able to find the one you needed at the dealer.

So, would it be ok to run without it? I don't remember taking one off of the 6.0.
