Wanting to go with Aftermarket Heads but my cam is holding me back
#11
It's time to pull the trigger:
I'm going with the PRC 225 as cast heads and I've decided to replace the camshaft to better utilize the better flowing heads. With these 225 as cast the decks are thicker and the 13 degree valve angle will go a long way in choosing a larger camshaft with reducing PTV issues. The LQ9 piston is flat no valve reliefs and .007 above the deck reducing PTV clearances even more. This is the one of the reasons I'm choosing the aftermarket head over the CNC'd factory castings.
Now my cam choice is more or less limited by my 3200 stall converter and a sensible RPM limit.
The Texas Speed cams are $100 off so I'm looking to do this in a heads/cam package.
I like the Tsunami 235/240 .629"/.615" 111* but I'll be pushing it as they recommend a 3500 stall.
The Torquer V2 232/234 .600"/.600" 112* is kind of mild for the 225 head flow but a safe choice.
TSP 233/239 .600"/.600" 112* TSP says 5-7 more hp than the Torquer V2 (I like the larger duration split)
The Magic Stick 3 makes a lot of power with these heads but a minimum 3800 stall recommended 238/242 .600"/.600" 112
I guess I should call Texas Speed and see what camshaft they recommend... thoughts?

Talked to Texas Speed (32 callers in queue, long wait) told him my specs and truck. As soon as I mentioned the 225 heads he said the Torquer V.2 or V.4 would be a good choice. Made the choice easier for me as they both were on my list. He said the 333/339 needed more converter and only gains 5 or so horsepower over the Torquer V.4
I ordered the 225 as cast with the dual 660 springs, titanium retainers with 62cc chambers,
this will bump the compression up to 11.44
Torquer V.4 231/234 .629"/.615" 111*
SBE LS1's with this combo are making around 450+ wheel so the larger LQ9 should hopefully match go slightly beyond. I do need a better Intake and throttle body, I'll probably go with a TBSS and 92mm unless I can find a deal on a used FAST.
"Long term" I'm pretty old, I don't think like I did when I was thirty... but I do understand the question lol
Drive the truck maybe twice a week weather permitting, n/a only, street driven, no track, fun down in ole Mexico now & then.
