tbss intake porting or pro flo/mid ram
#1
had a few quick questions and figured id ask em here before going any further. long story short the build is on my 4.8 thats fbo cammed etc and thats awaiting heads. i figured since its winter and its on storage id try to squeeze some free ponies out of it or if i should just do a pro flo or holley mid ram. ive seen with the ls6 intakes people take the port opening from a 5/8 socket to a 11/16 and figured id try the same in the runners and in the mouth and if i get ballsy enough cut the thing open port and reseal it with some 8115 panel bonding adhesive. have any of you guys ported the tbss or would it be beneficial to pick a better intake manifold with the hci setup? for the record ive ported heads throttle bodys etc i know plastic is a different ballpark but figured id give it a shot
thanks in advance

with a 4.8 you want to be really careful that you don't put on something thats too big. Why don't you just start with the 87mm tbss/nbs intake and go from there. I wouldnt think there is any porting necessary.

ive had the tbss on for a while now im just itching for some more out of it and figured with the heads setup the intake would probably be the most restrictive piece. in all honesty im trying to get the most i can out of this thing but just like you said too big=loss of power. im just trying to find that happy medium

Sorry what heads do you have? They aren't in your sig.
I'm not sure there is much more usable power in that intake for you... I wouldnt waste my time on it. I doubt you are pushing much more power than a LS2 does and those are just fine with a mild cam and this intake.
I vote you save your money for boost or more cubes.

There are a few company's that port plastic intakes, and with the professional porting of the truck intake they are only seeing 7-10 hp gain and with the nnbs around 9-13rwhp, which are decent gains for free if you can match the professional quality, but the 4.8L will loose some serious tq. there is not to much tq to begin with any ways and with your 4.88s you could make it a top end screamer.
If you don't have the heads, I wouldn't buy them and would spend that money on a 6.0

im going with prc stg 2.5 5.3 heads with the 58cc and having them milled as much as possible without PTV issues im shooting for at least 10.5:1 preferably 11:1
+. 69 camaro i do appreciate the input but the 4.8 will be staying until it hangs a set of rods lol. i know it sounds stupid/waste of money but im gonna see the full potential i can get out of this thing all motor. im .3 off of the goal i had set for the truck, with the new suspension i should have it in the bag alone but id like to see how far i can push it. as for tq i wasnt that worried about it with my gearing and loose converter. i do think the 78mm tb is restricting me quite a bit up top even though this thing yanks pretty hard. but since ive had some experience porting and actully tested tonight on my nbs intake im feeling pretty confident on it

Oh I thought you already had the 87mm intake. I'd just pop that on without porting. It will be worth some power up top and with a 4000 converter and traction issues down low that's exactly what you need. I wouldn't bother porting it though.

i do have the tbss intake manifold but used the fast ls1-ls2 tb adapter, i think the baby dick throttle body is hurting it specially since my shift points are almost at 7l. as for the traction issues its honestly killing me. full preload then anything past 1/4 throttle just ignites the tires. but i figured even if it got me 5hp more than before every little bit counts when im so close to the goal lol
