Default Smog legal torque

OK guys I have read a lot of your threads and wrote down a lot of good info but I need to modify it for my application. This is what I am thinking. I am going with a 402 or 408 stroker and AFR heads. Thats were I am now. I need opinions on the rest.

The trucjk is primarily a tow vehicle and you can look at my sig for the mods I have now. I would like to ditch the turbo , because of all the little headaches Ive had with it, and go with a N\A motor but I need big torque numbers. Here is the kicker, I live in California so it has to pass smog. What kind of numbers can I expect?

If you have 1st hand experience can you chime in on what would work and what is a waste? Thanks!!

1.85 rockers?

FAST or Ls6 manifold?

Bigger TB?

Cam \ Specs????

TQ verter?

Headers??
Anything Ive missed???

So much for getting a reply from someone with "1st hand experience". I have a TURBO now! I have gobs of power but I dont like the little gremlins in the system or the EGT's while towing. I have real bad Piston Slap so I am doing the motor anyways.

I dont want to get into a Turbo vs Blower battle. Everything Ive listed has the ability to pass smog in California. Please, only helpful replies please.

for you dude.
I live in Ca and am pretty aware of the smog regs. Yes a large displacement can be smog legal with the right tune, no problem.

Headers are illegal and any movement of the cat's location as well. You will need a CARB sticker for any mod that does not appear to be stock.

As was suggested, a roots type blower will provide the low end torque you require and the Magnacharger is CA smog legal.

Mello.

Dude what is with your attitude? You asked and we told you. You realize anything bigger than mid 220 duration cam is not going to be easy to get passed the sniffer in a stroker motor? You realize lt headers are illegal in Cali? You realize that with tall tires and towing you create alot of strain on the tc and if you have a higher rated one in there its just going to be a recipe for heat and you will burn the **** and your trans up? You realize they are going to give you hell when they find out you did a motor swap right? You realize throwing heads on your truck if they dont have a SMOG sticker you wont pass? You realize that the TB without a sticker is useless? The only two things really left to comment on are the intake and rockers. The rockers from what I have *read* are worth about 10-15hp which isnt bad, something to consider for how easyt htey are to install. The gains between the FAST and LS6 IMO arent big enough to justify the cost, I would go with an LS6.

You realize we are just trying to help you? If you dont want help dont ask.

Dude, I did not have a problem until TBSS's 1st post. I ask a very specific question and got "Get a Radix". I really appreciate input but I am looking for input from people who either know for sure because they are mechanics or people who live in Cali and have done the mods. I have plenty of power with the turbo but I have had oil issues that are not bad but are getting irritating. I also have started with the dredded piston slap. I am planning on doing the engine with a stronger rotating assembly. I was considering going N/A. This was the purpose of the post.

I know there a smog legal heads

I know there are smog legal cams

I know there are smog legal intakes

I know Fuddle makes a higher stall converter that keeps the stock tow capacity with no rise in heat

I believe there are shorty smog legal headers??

ETC.

I am just looking for info on what works and what is a waste. I dont see why a bigger motor wouldnt pass with all smog equipment being the same.

I want help I just dont want "get a radix"!!

TBSS was very out of line with what he said in my opinion. He got hostile for no reason.

Yeah there is stuff out there that you can get away with untill someone really inspects teh vehicle. Here in TX you got to have cats but if oyu tune the computer to where it doesnt throw a code then you are fine unless they look under the vehicle. Shortie headers are a waste of money. ANY converter that has a higher than factory stall rating and even some that are the same like yours in the HD which stalls to about 2500 right? Aftermarket converters are smaller in diameter and by nature create more heat. Big tires and towing dont go together when trying to use a perfromance converter. You can throw a cam in there but it is going to have to be a mild one if oyu go stroker. Strokers require more fuel than your 364 which causes more Nox emissions and will make you FAIL the sniffer. As far as heads go, you better hope no one notices teh aftermarket ingraving on the heads otherwise they will tag your truck and no more truck for you till you get the stockers back on. If you really want heads talk to Richard at WCCH maybe he can make you a set without his insignia on the end of the heads. All of the things pretty much you listed are all subject to whether or not the inspector notices them or not. You can switch out parts for inspection then put the good stuff back on if you want. Point blank you want more tq and a RADIX will give you massive low end tq which is what oyu asked for right? You will find that alot of people have been through exactly what you have and these are the conclusions we have come to. You got to find a happy medium to make the smog police happy
