Default need torque 4 big truck

allrighty, I got a 2000 2500 non HD with a 6.0 I'm planning on building a tuff truck/crawler. Has anyone built a 6.0 for straight monster torque for offroad stuff i.e. big tires, gears, lift. ect. My truck has iron heads but I have 5.3 heads and ls6 cam. I will mud the truck alittle but cant see a need for 5700+ rpms. what combo would be fairly cheap and make dem big ole tires feel smaller? anyone seen numbers?

What kind of budget are you working with?

really going for best bang for buck but I will go through the motor so I will install an Ls6 oil pump and timing set so H/C/I combo with torque #'s is really what I'm looking at. Unless I could find a deal on a blower. Another thing is I will have a water snoorkle.

The stock oil pump will be sufficient. The timing gears themselves will do fine as well, I'd replace the chain though with the LS6 unit for $50 and leave the rest alone. The 5.3L heads will improve throttle response and low end cylinder filling by increasing intake velocity, and compression will be no less than 10.5:1. Mill the 5.3L heads about .010-.015" and you'll be up around 10.8-10.9:1, perfect for 91/92 octane and a good tune. LS6 cam is "adequate", and will work fine. There are better out there for brute low end torque but if you already have the cam, it'll do fine.

Chances are your 300hp/360lb-ft motor will become a 340hp/390lb-ft motor at the flywheel. What size tires are you going to be running? The 9.5" in that 2500 non-HD is probably good for up to 37-38" in a full size pickup.

Also add in a good set of deep gears so you have the ability to get the motor up where the torque comes in. Plus full bolt ons and a very good tune.

Also a 6speed swap would be good to get excellent gear spacing with 4.56's or you could use your 4L80 and some 5.13's with a GV overdrive to be able to drive around too.

Or just match the 4L80E for the tire size properly.

33-35= 4.10's
35-36= 4.56's
37-38= 4.88's
39-40= 5.13's
41+ or really heavy 40's =5.38's

Forget what the numbers inside the boxes say, try to stick in the green.

340hp 390 ft lbs is weak. A 350 vortec can do that with a cam and tuning.

If you want actual torque at a usable rpm for a big heavy truck then you want the 8.1 liter big block. There is just no comparison.

So can a little 4.8 with a cam and tuning

Sure a 350 can do that, we're only talking a difference of 14 cubes. Mind you, the 1998 Vortec 350 made only a whopping 255hp and 330lb-ft of torque from the factory, but I still agree with you and understand what you're saying. The Vortec 6000 will make that power at a lower rpm and carry it further with a broader torque curve than the Vortec 350, mostly thanks to the intelligence level of computer controls today.

340hp and 390lb-ft is truck torque, a 2500 non-HD will do fine with that once regeared for the tire size. I think it's a realistic estimate, especially with 5.3L heads and a small-ish camshaft. If he makes more, great, but probably not with big heavy tires no matter how much he regears.

Put a 3/4 ton axle and big tires behind and in front of a 4.8L and I highly doubt an N/A 4.8L could do what the 6.0L is being asked to do.
