More 5.3 head questions
I just won a set of 706's off ebay for $25 and I'm going to rebuild them for when i put my cam in. I was wondering what ya'll thoughts were as far as what valves/springs to run? I'm going with the low lift 212/218 its like .525 and .530 I was thinking the yellow zo6 springs and new stainless valves and new GM retainers. When all is said and done I plan to mill .010 from them. Anyone have any hints or tips for me as far as which hardware to run?
thanks again

i think you got the right idea on springs etc, but if i were you since you got the heads off i would atleast mill more than .010 thousandths off to be able to tell a difference

Well I was wondering how much i should mill. I mean its going to be a very mild street motor So i didnt want the compression above 10 to 1. Is .020 too much for 7.400 pushrods? Sorry if these are dumb questions I just want to do it right the first time.

even if you got up to 11.0:1 you could get away with 93 octane all day, i used to do it everyday with the old truck.
when you do heads/cam, you are gonna have to tune to optimize them anyway, may as well bump up compression for all the power you can get....and i think .030" mill would still be fine as far as cleareance issues go...
as far as the 7.400" rods....a pushrod length checker is a fairly inexpensive tool, and helps a lot in determining the optimal lenth.

Well i figured that at 10 to 1 and up I HAD to run 93. Where i'm from all we have is 91 and only sometimes due to being in the middle of nowhere. And on the pushrod length i wasent sure how much the lifters compensated for length. I would like to make more power just not at the expense of ruining my motor thats all. Thanks again

Well now that I've got the heads in my hands I'd like to get the ball rolling. Is there an online calculator where I can find out my compression with different amounts of milling? ANd my other question is how much is too much for the LS6 yellow springs (.570 max lift)? I am leaning towards the highlift version of the 212/218 wich is 558/561 but didnt know if you needed more of a saftey margin. thanks again

The yellow springs will just get the job done. I'm running them in my wife's truck with a 208º .556" lift cam and they're working just fine. Very quiet valve train.
I can help you calculate your compression ratio but we're going to have to do it on the phone. Our number is (818)705-5454. Leave a call back number if you get the answering machine.
Cheers,
Richard
