Default lsx block. older cam question

i got a call today from someone puting an lsx block in their truck

my phone died mid conversation and he may have figured things out by now. he said the new block has the cam sensor in the front and they reused the old cam.

to me that sounds like it wont work if the cam does not have the required machine work on the front to run the cam sensor.

anyone know anything about this stuff. i was about to call the guy back and see if he got it running.

I'm pretty sure the newwer style cam sensor will work with a old cam, you just need a newwr cam gear.

Can use any lsx cam, just needs to run the correct cam drive gear to suit the ecu. (new engine reads the cam gear, not the cam itself.)

edit. you beat me ^^ that is correct.

That is correct. I recently put an older style cam in a 2008 G8. Just had to put on the correct cam gear to make it work.

Just so the info can be found in the same location, as everyone has said the Gen III style cams (reluctor on the back of cam) can be run in the Gen IV motors due to the camshaft position sensor reading off the cam gear. However the Gen IV style cams can not be used in the Gen III motors as they don't have the reluctor on the back of the cam, unless you use the Gen IV front cover on the Gen III and leave the old camshaft position sensor in the rear of the block just to seal the hole. It doesn't really matter in most cases as in general most will obtain an aftermarket cam anyway, but every so often so have someone asking if they can run an LS2 or LS7 cam in their Gen III.
