LS6 heads on 6.0L
#1
for a tow rig, would it be worth it to swap to a set of LS6 heads in place of the stock iron heads? i have a brand new set sitting around.
how much compression increase? they flow basically the same, right?
i will be freshening up this thing in the near future. its only used for towing a racecar.

Typically the LS6 heads will up the c/r to 10.+:1. Towing with that c/r in the hot summer months can lead to pinging issues even with premium grade gas. I guess it would depend on how much weight your towing. A little more cam duration can help bleed of some of the high cylinder pressure the LS6 heads will make. No doubt they'll help the overall power of the 6.0l though........ Just be careful you don't box your way into a setup that pings under load.
Good luck,

i will be going to either a 4.10 or 4.56 gear, so a bit larger cam might help me out. i want to keep my stock converter.
i will be pulling a ~28' goosneck with 3100lb racecar inside.

My setup hates the summer heat and likes kr without even towing anything, I could only imagine 3k+ more pounds. Its taken me alot of tweaking to get it to run 26 WOT with 10.5:1 on 93 in the heat. If the chambers were machined and compression around 9.5:1 I think that would be optimal for a heavy truck and towing running 93 I think those heads would do well with lower compression like rich was saying.
Personnaly Id stay with the stock heads and put the money/work towards a cam.

also, regarding those patriot heads... did you make decent power with them? i had a set of stage 2 5.3 patriots on my camaro and made crap for power. 376rwhp with a 230/236 cam. 6 speed trans

The LS6 head would work well, but as mentioned, it could lead to some detonation problems in the summer heat. If your LS6 heads are new, we could take them in as a partial trade towards a set of PRC-ported 6.0L aluminum heads. This way you could have the flow without having to worry with detonation issues.
