LQ9 w/ 243's...Cam choice?
#1
I have a LQ9/4L60E in my 05 rcsb with 3:73 gears. It has LT's, no cats, dual/dual flowmaster 40 series, K&N CAI, 160* thermo, TB Bypass, vette 2nd/billet 4th servos, custom tune and factory e-fans. I will be putting 243's (hopefully ported) on it by September. I have the stock verter and have no plans of changing anytime in the future. I tow a 16'-18' bass boat and haul my atv's/motorcycle's. I want good gains from off-idle to around 6000-6200, and still have good towing capabilities. I don't consider a cam swap "worth it" with less than a 25-30hp/tq gain. With all that said, what cam would you guys reccomend? I was thinking maybe a TSP220, but then Zippy suggested a TSP224, and the more I read about 210/218-212/218 cams, the more I think they might suit me.

Yea sorry, I deleted the other threads. I just like to start fresh, people tend to look at new threads more than updated old ones. And I kept gettin mixed answers and confusion in the others. This should be the last one though.

Eh, I think you'd like the 212/218 as it provides more power under the curve which is what you're wanting especially since you pull a boat and tow frequently. I think that 224 wouldn't have enough bottom end for your liking.

Yea, this week Michael lol...I remember when you were hell bent that the TR224 was the only cam for a 6.0
JFWY man...
That's an excellent cam, it worked great in tdrumm's 5.3. You could still go a little bigger in a 6.0 with the factory verter if you wanted to though. I'm going to be running the Vinci 216/224 .551/.551 115 in my LQ9, but I have a CircleD 2800ish triple disc for mine. Something in between Michael's recommendation and my cam would work well IMO. I'd go with a wider LSA for the broader torque curve for towing though, just my .02. I think the Comp 212/218 .55x/.55x 114 would suit your needs perfectly.

One thing about a cam swap is that you don't really want to have to do it twice. Many on here over cam and then have to change it back smaller. Many on here are afraid of the bigger cams and go small just to end up changing it and later go bigger. When I put together the engine for my Tahoe I knew I wanted a 6.0L. I wanted an LQ9, but at that time they were hard to find for a reasonable price. I bought an LQ4 and changed the heads to get the compression where I wanted. My compression on that is around 10.7:1 or so. When I picked the camshaft I knew that I wanted to keep it small enough to idle nicely and have all the low end torque I could get with some upper rpm improvements. I wanted to be able to tow with it if needed and not have it be laggy with the 3.42 gear and stock torque converter. Now that pretty well puts a 224 as big as you'd want to go. The 112LSA is simply because that's what I wanted due to no plans of anything except N/A for that motor. I wanted the lift to be in the .560 range so that I could run the LS6 springs. They are quiet, they don't beat the valves and seats up as bad, fairly inexpensive, and have a low failure rate. That and the good deal I got on the cam is why I picked the TR224. I'm not saying use that cam, my point is that a duration up to 224 is just fine with your cubic inches and compression. The compression is the bigger point there. Some of my other friends have used the same 222/224 cam that I have in my 5.3L in LQ4's and LQ9's and have noticably less torque and a much choppier idle. I have an idle clip of the Tahoe around here somewhere, it idles and sounds almost completely stock. As for towing, I have a video of it at 6,000+ feet altitude towing a trailer with the Tahoe loaded up with crap. I did that and still managed 15mpg running gas (I normally like to run it o E85). My point is if you have compresion, don't be afraid of duration. There are alot of good options out there. I would also look into the Trick Flow TFS-30602002 which is a 220/224 .575/.575 on a 112LSA. Leading Edge Performance also has a 216/220 .561/.564 on a 114LSA which would have an idle just a touch rougher than the LS6 cam would which is abogut dead glass smooth and still have good power to about 6200rpm with a peak at about 5600rpm.
