Default LQ4 cam question in 2500HD

Ok, I've done my research and can't find any hard data on this.

My truck is a 2003 Ext Cab 2500HD (6.0L, 4L80E; HEAVY TRUCK) 4x4 with 4.10 gears and 33" tires. Once a week or so, I tow my 1,700 pound jet boat, occasionally I tow 5,000 pounds, but I don't want to lose the ability to tow 8-10k, as I do live on a farm. I do, however, want MORE POWER!!

The truck has a SLP cai and is tuned by Nelson's Performance. I know I need LT's and true duals (coming with the cam swap).

I already have a Trick Flow 220/224 .575/.575 lift on 112 LSA cam. Will this cam still be able to tow with a 3k stall HD convertor (tranny cooler, shift kit, lt's, etc.)? Also, which convertor for towing? I'm thinking the 3k range with the cam, and I've heard great thing about Yank and PE for towing.

Thanks in advance for the help, and please no flaming or "Search" comments. I really have searched this site and many others on this cam.

Ive got a 01 CCSB with the same drivetrain and tires. I just got done rebuilding everything has the lq4 bored .030 with forged rods and flat tops. I put in a tsp224 cam and 2800-3000 circle d triple disk converter with the lsxrt intake and throttle body along with the usual bolt ons lts etc. Lets say I was pleasntly surprised with the torque and powerband. You and me both know how heavy the HDs are and I have no problem spinning tires and getting her moving. I will say you lose some tq under 1500rpm but hardly noticable and I feel confident towing the stock capacities of the truck. I think the cam you have would be nice and have great street manners and good towing if you needed it. Also if you get a tq converter make sure to get the 4l80e bolt pattern which is a 6 bolt instead of the 3 bolt 4l60e made that mistake once but got it worked out nicely.

I think you'll be fine with that cam. It close to mine(TR224) and I have PLENTY of torque...

When you spec a converter, make sure you tell the builder everything about your truck, how you use it, and what you expect out of it. It can be "tailored" to do what you want, and Dave at Yank usually gets it right the first time.

Just got my reply from Allen Nelson on this. As everyone, he suggests 212/218 as a tow only cam, if you're willing to give up higher rpm power. He believes my cam is a little large for heavy towing, but believes it can be bearable and will make great power. Also suggests no larger than a 3k stall. Now must decide 317 or 241 heads. He says 241 because they flow similar to the 317 but the compression bump would be worth it.

243 heads are what you want better than the 241s which flow less than the 317 if im correct

You are correct sir...the 243's and 317's have very similar ports, except that the 243's have smaller combustion chambers (64cc) vs. the larger 72cc combustion chamber of the 317 (before milling and/or bowl work of course).

As for a cam recommendation...I know that I may be starting to sound like a broken record, but I feel that the Crane/Vinci Trucker (216/224 .551/.551 115) is an excellent choice for a heavy 6.0 powered tow vehicle, and would work well with a tight 2600 converter. Don't forget to upgrade the auxiliary trans cooler, even if you don't go for a higher stall converter, considering that the truck will see the towing duties that it will be performing

Thanks for all the replies! Looks like the concenses is that my cam will be ok, and since I already have it, I'm going to run it. I know the 243 heads are ideal, but I already have a perfect set of 241 heads like I can't even give away, so I believe I'm going to work them a little and use them for now for the compression bump. If I ever go FI, I will switch back to the 317 heads.

Thanks!!!
