Look!! Cam question
I have a 99 reg cab 5.3 w hptuners and exhaust.the truck has 160k miles. Im looking into a cam and need advice. I found a comp 220/220 .581/.581 [ts220r] so my main questions are.....what all will i definitely have to buy? I know valve springs and pushrods...anything else?. And 2nd question is what differences will i see in driveability and power? May be dumb questions but im no mechanic. Thanks for any help

Buy a new crank bolt and balancer install tool in my sig. Also might get water pump gaskets for extra insurance.. Thats all. Drive ability will all be in the tune.. Should make power to 6200-6400 range. What gears do you have and will you be adding a stall converter?

not sure if valve seals come with the cam kit. I'd swap them too. That balancer tool is nice. I did my swap w/o one. The engine was out of the truck, and still a p.i.t.a.
you are leaving a lot of power on the table running an oversized cam w/ the stock stall verter. You could run a tighter stall, and would barley notice a difference over stock with that small of cam.
if you're really set on no stall, id recommend a smaller duration, something closer to a 212/218.

The valve seals come w the kit. And as far as the tool I don't think I'll need that I work at a Chevrolet dealership. The reason I posted here is bc everyone had something different to say when I asked what to replace. What stall would u recommend? And price? And with .581 lift, are the stock rockers going to be suitable?

I'd recommend a Circle-D 3000-3200 278mm converter, which will react like stock at part throttle and normal driving, but flash around it's advertised stall rating when you go WOT. As for the rockers, many guys run the stockers up to and over .600 lift, even if it isn't considered optimal. If a good set of aftermarket rockers isn't in the budget, I'd do the Comp trunion upgrade at least, just for some relatively cheap insurance. As for springs, I'd stay away from the Comp 918's due to their bad track record of breakages, and go for the PAC 1218's instead.
FYI, there's a member here who's screen name is bluecajun5.3, who got his 2wd rcsb into the 12's with a cam only TR220-112 5.3, 3200 converter, 4.10 gears, and good traction, including slicks IIRC.

I run a PI. Only other stall I'd run would be yank. A lot of people run circle D on this site. They speak very highly of them. But are more of a budget converter.
I think a circle D runs around $400-$500. A yank/pi run 700-1000 new. Depends on if you want a single or triple disk.
I'd agree with bud on the stall speed at around 3200.
I run a 230/236 .581 lift cam, with the stock rocker arms. Haven't had one issue.

a stall doesnt give you more hp as you may already know, but it will def. drop some et's and make your truck feel stronger on the street as well. with my cam and stall i gained about a whole second in the 1/4 (after tuning). I think tsp advertises some where around 35hp peak gain for that cam? it will require tuning of course...
