How many of you are running oil coolers?
I never had an oil temp gauge until recently and now that I have one I'm always starring at it since it's usually pegged out @ 250F if I'm not driving like a 80 year old woman. Even on hot days it'll get pegged just running around town in stop and go.
Ideal engine temp is between 160-180 right? And my radiator and coolant are doing fine keeping my engine temps in that vicinity so I know I'm not overheating and everything is working properly but I'm worried my oil temps are getting to hot and possibly as hot as 500F-600F when I'm in boost alot racing or driving like I stole it.
What's ideal oil temp to run at and who's got oil coolers and how are they working? Or am I just being paranoid?

Man what weight oil are you running?Only reason I ask is because how thinned out is a standard 10w30 getting at those temps?I know a thicker oil won't change your temps but it might give you more protection from having any issues.

I did a little reading on the subject just out of curiosity. Didn't really find anything on turbo engine temps. Most say oil pan temps of 230 is a max. Good synthetics a 300 max. Mind you this is an in pan temp.
Curious where you are taking that temp? IMO an oil cooler would not be a bad idea at all with a turbo setup. That or/and very frequent oil changes.

I dont know what my oil temps get to but i have a large cooler infront of the tranny cooler with a small electrical fan pushing air thru it. since its a sss i have the small oil cooler in the radiator too.

When you reach about 260-280* you are getting into dangerous territory.
Remember wherever the sensor is is not the worst case senario. You could be over 300* somewhere a hot spot resides and cooking small quantities of oil cannot be good for the overall condition of your oil.
Is your sensor f-ed up?

I'm not sure where the sensor is, I'll have to find it but I'm pretty sure Rick didn't put it on the return line from the turbo. At least I wouldn't assume he did. I was running 10-30W and now it's 20-50W per my engine builders advice since it's broken in already. I don't think the sensor is messed up since it seems to read normal at start up and when the engine's starting to warm up and I can see it cool down to 200F on cool days and cruising, but I'll have to see where exactly the temp sensor is at, I hope it's not in the oil pan or I'm screwed!!
Thanks for the advice/help, I'll post back up when I find where the sensor is.
