Default getting block bored out

so i was going to bore my 5.3 block to ls1 size to do a 383 stroker kit. so i call a guy up last night. he's the most recommended guy around i guess. well he said he can only take out .030" at a time and he would have to do it like 3 or more times to get the bore to the right size so he would charge me as if he were doing 3-4 different blocks. this doesn't sound right to me. so basically $400-$500 to bore out my 5.3l. does this sound right?

Yea... For that price I bought my 6.0 block from jjz28 here on the forums, and it was bored out to 4.030 already for me. Go to the 2nd most recommended shop in your area

Most shops will charge close to 500 for bore and assembly. Atleast I now of a very trustworthy builder in memphis charges 500 for boring and assembly.

nut this guy is wanting to charge me like he was doing 4 blocks because it will take him 4 times of running through the block to get the bore right.

I dont understand. Why is he the most recommended unless he is also assembling? Their are MANY machine shops around you im sure. If its just the machine work you can get it cheaper and done with just as good of quality im sure.

Your getting snowed. The guy is milking you. I have a half a dozen machine shops around my area that can bore a block to size in 1 shot. I could understand some extra charge due to the heavier cut that has to be made, but not three bores. Furthermore, he's not setting up the boring bar over and over on the same cylinder which is what the bulk of the boring charge is all about (setup time). Talk some sense to him or find another shop.

Good luck.

Richard

i think i'll find another shop or just get a ls1 block. i just can't decide what i want. a 100 pound wieght loss or strength. he does work for the dealerships i'm sure thats why he charges so much. he can sell that to a dealer who just charges the customer but he isn't gonna pull that on me lol.

People mention strength. But look what people consistanlty push alum blocks to? many many stock block 10 sec ls1's. Not sayingyou could push your stock block tahoe to 10's.
