I dug out the heads from garage attic. I was going to ask for advice on them, but I think I already know the answer 🙄
They are pretty rusty, which is obviously a problem. But one one of the heads I see 2 of them (both the exhaust ones) are hung open, so that means they are bent. Toss them in the trash bin?! 🤕
Doesn't mean the heads are bad, Just means you have a few valves that need replacing.
I don't know what to do now. Should I order the tools to take them apart and at least see if I can lap the ones that look okay and replace the bent ones?
I called my local machine shop and said it's about $300 to recondition them for labor, plus cost of new valve seals and actual bent valves cost. He says they machine them instead of lapping them? Not sure what that means.
I asked about rotating assembly balancing and he said they do it for $200. So I think I'm just going to take everything to them at once when I'm ready. They are only like 5 miles from me and open on Saturday morning.

They No longer Grind with a stone and hand lap the valves like the old days . They use a cutter to cut the valve seat angle. This is more accurate and when done correctly seals properly with out the need to lap the valves for a good seal.
The bent ones are junk. Depending on the how the others look they will reface them if they are salvageable. They will also check the fit of the valve guide to make sure they they are within spec.
Ok, finally found the courage to file the rings. After filing a few I kinda got the hang of it.
Filed them to for a street application per the Hastings table, using 4.020" bore diameter:
0.020" for 1st compression ring
0.018" for 2nd compression ring
0.015" for oil control rings
I'm not clear on the instructions on the expander ring joint location. It says to place it above the piston boss area. Where is that on the piston? Other articles I've seen say it's the outside of the engine (3 or 9 o'clock looking down)?
Ive never read that far into the instructions.
But i always put the ring joints to the front or rear of the engine. dont forget to deburr the cut edges of the rings also.
