Default gen 4 cam swap

i know this stuff is always beat to death but i got a question maybe, hopefully someone can help me with. the lifters in my 4.8 seem to be different then what i was expecting. there is no notch for a dowel to fit into. i put a 5/16 dowel in passenger side and it somewhat holds the lifters up but in the driver side its loose and does nothing. i got a 3/8 dowel sanded some to fit. it goes in tight and still doesnt hold the lifters up... went to do pen magnets but im not going for 5 bucks a pop for them. being the 4.8 doesnt have dod the stock lifters are alright with an aftermarket cam right? if not ill prob just pull the motor to do everything since its pretty bare as it is now

I thought of using the dowels and having at least some of them held up somewhat and hoping the others don't drop. Spinning the cam they do all stay up and I have to push them down , barely touching, to move them back down to the cam.. I got more dowels So I will attempt one more time with that.
