Default Does anybody have a clue why?

Ok guys, here is the thing......for the second time, my truck has broken her 2nd timing chain....causing the valves to kiss the pistons and bend the hell off. To all the people I know, only to my truck has happened this.

I searched the forum to help me decide which timing chain to get cuz I ain't trusting the stock one no more. Someone sells me the double roller for $100 brand new, but I also read that you need to make modifications, shim the oil pump, and have a little trouble aligning the pick-up tube and I don't want to go through all that. I saw some of you guys saying that you got the ls2 chain and I'm thinking that I am going with it myself.

Anyways, does anybody have a clue why this happen? Have any of you had to go through this also?

Do you like bouncing it off the rev limiter a lot? If so that could cause extra stress on the chain and cause it to stretch or break.

I have had LOTS of gi perf small and big blocks...never broke a timing chain. If you're having a problem I'd buy the best one don't scrimp cause you don't wanna have to do it again. I assume you have a aftermarket cam? Could the cam be walking forward and binding/breaking the chain?

That is strange. I've been on this site and others for bout 3 years. You are the only one I have read about breaking a timing chain. Let alone 2. Makes me think something is wrong in the valve train. Someting binding? Very stiff valve springs? Dunno... but this is highly unusual I would say.

Is there a possibility the chain is getting out of alignment? What im getting at is there a possibility that the bolts on the cam are comming loose or is there a possibility your bearings are so fried that your main bearings are letting the crank move or something. Just throwing out some possibilities.

Try using a timing chain dampener. You can get it from GM. Originally all gen 3's were going to have them but the bean counters scratched the idea. However I know the 2004 GTO's came with them, cause that's what my parts guy looked at to find this one. It's only about $15 and that's just cheap insurance. It also comes with bolts I believe.

I've read that some blocks already have the holes for the dampener too, but most need to be drilled and tapped. Maybe an LS2 timing chain and dampener might be a nice budget upgrade.
