Default Cam for 385 SBC

When it comes to cams , im just stupid. Don't get it. Now Im looking for a NICE cam to throw in my new 385 build. I like the lopey sound if that helps.

Now a member here has giving me some help on some comp cams with some graphs on HP & TQ which has been much appreciated, but there are way to many cams out there to choose from........

is anybody running a Thumpr cam in there stroker ? Would like to hear about it before i buy if im going that route.

this is what i will be working with.

O decked SBC stroked & bored to a 385
5.7 H beam rods
KB 9926 pistons @ 9:5 cr
New Vortec heads 64 cc machined for Max lift 550
Possible Holley 650 cfm or Edelbrock carb.
Edelbrock air gap or Prof prod copy.
For now stock TC
And rear gears are 373 ( i think )

Im ready toput this together but im on the fence when it comes to the cam.
Im also concerned about the clearance issue i hear about between the cam lobes and rods..

So far im thinking of these to choose from, but if you have a better cam in mind please speak up.

Your gonna need to get a stall if you want to put a good cam in there especially if you want to get the most out of the stroker. Have you looked at the 262 or comp 270.

That 268 from what i heard is a good cam for your setup but you will need a stall for sure.

I like the XE268 or Lunati 230@.050 with .480 lift, 109 LSA, had one in my 383, pulled nice, just add 1.6 rockers.

the problem with an sbc stroker is that you are limited to the lift you can use, like you mentioned... clearance btwn the rods and the lobes. that crank is a tight fit in there. I just built a 383 for a turbo application, it was a flat tappet 474/501 lift (they are calculated with the stock rocker ratio, 1.5:1), and I used 1.6 rockers to get the rest of the lift out of it. it fit fine, but I would be leary of putting anything bigger in there.

you will want to use at least 1.6 rockers, even 1.7 if you can find em.

go to the comp cams site, and download cam help software. its not an exact desktop dyno, but at least you can put in your exact specs and compare their grinds to see what works best for you.

also, swap that TC. with your power band moving up the RPM range, you dont want it to be lugging down low all the time.

On the rod bolt clearance; you can run a small base circle cam or grind the inner bolt heads on 1,2,5,6 cyls to clear. This article says there are bolts arp makes for clearance. Regardless, you need it balanced and the machine shop can take care of all of those issues before balance.

Thanks for the info but its already built & balanced. And i read that article too, pretty good one.

Im more interested in a nice cam.
yesturday i started to think about it, and im just wondering if i should stay with the TBI set up maybe use a 454 tbi ?

I was going to go carb ( and probably still will ) but was just contemplating since i have all the tbi and will need to buy all the carb & parts to go with it.

Just dont want to regret it at a later date, get paid fri so im buying something.

All of those cam will give you a choppy idle. I don't know of anyone personally that has run the thumper cams. They seem interesting. I like that first one.
