Cam??

hey guys,i have a cam i will be installing this week along with new pushrods, lifters, valve springs, valve locks, double roller timing chain, and retainers. well i was just wondering what kinda performance difference i woudl be able to tell, like time wise, for the 1/4 mile. the cam in now is the stock cam, it is .382/.402 lift. btw, this is in my '94 chevy silverado ext cab and the engine is a 5.7L 350, not vortec tho. but anyways the cam i will be installing is .454/.480 lift, im jsut wondering what kinda difference i will be able to tell. please let me know, thanks

I built a few tbi motors like yours. That cam will work good, but you will need to upgrade from those stock heads if thats what you have. The swirl port design is great for efficiency and torque, but they just don't work good past 5000 rpms. I would either look for some Vortech heads and GM Performance Parts intake for them, and say a Big Block Throttle body, OR preferably some Edelbrock heads, and the Edelbrock MPI kit. I know thats a lot of money, and you don't have to do all that, I'm just trying to give you a heads up on what would give you the best results. That cam is probably gonna net you about 5 tenths or so, but you will be leaving usable rpms on the table without good heads and induction.

thanks rhino, i appreciate the info about the heads, and yes the mpi kit is expensive. but thanks man, and yea i heard the same thing about the heads are the main restriction on a tbi engine. but i will get some heads soon, but i have a 100 wet shot of nos and the cam going in this xmas lol so i hope to get close to the 13's. but anyways i appreciate it.

You will definately need a good tune to make it run right first of all. Also, I suggest an adjustable fuel pressure regulator so you can fine tune it further. And I second the motion for the vortec heads!

ok, thanks for all the help guys, i guess ill go with the vortec heads then lol, but yenko st, i have heard before that i need a tune for the cam, but then i have also heard that i dont since the cam is computer compatible, its a 50/50% of both sides of it, so wats the deal with that?

The deal is, it'll run, BUT not to its full potential. Definetly need to get an adjustable regulator on there so you can fine tune like Yenko said. My truck liked about 14 psi, but they are all different. Turbo City has the hookup on most all TBI parts, i.e. regulator, adjustable map sensors, high flow throttle bodies, injectors, etc.
