Default Brian Tooley Spring Users

Have a problem with the .660" Lift Extreme Spring Kit with Titanium Retainers kit I bought. Install height calls for the normal 1.78" and that nets 155 lbs to lift off. With my 243 castings I have I am at an install height of 1.68" and 200 and whatever pounds seat load...... Can't really cut the spring pocket in the head 100 thou I wouldn't think, nor should need too..... and my valves are manley's we have verified at stock length. I prefer the proper seat load and not monster strength lol.

We even tried these springs on a stock set of LS3 heads and it's oem valves and netted the same thing..... shorter install height. Switching to a Comp retainer gave me another .050" netting 1.73" but they are not the lightweight titaniums I paid for lol..

Has anyone found this using these springs? I am dealing with the outfit directly but I am just curious if I got a incorrectly machined set of retainers or what.

I took the heads home so I will verify myself but I was at the shop and they showed me the measurements on the heads so its not like they were screwing up.

Not gonna lie you are one of the few who check. I bet less than 1 in 10 check so I am going to join in among those who are interested to know.

I think I know the problem after talking with Brian. I was not the one running the measuring tool but will be now.... and it will be as hillbilly as it gets lol. The shop that did some work for me wasn't measuring correctly and according to Brian its common with his stuff lol. So we will see what I net for install height. I am betting its okay.

Seats are fine.. its stock depth.

Scary if guys don't check this but I know people just drop stuff in and hope for the best. I like knowing my stuff will last myself... well until I blow it up somehow lol.

On new springs I bet less than 1 in 25 check. These LS motors are stout and with the average cam swap being the most aggressive mod many guys will do not many failures are heard of.

Doesn't matter how stout an engine is... if a valve ends up in the cylinder its scrap iron. I don't not do things simply because most do. I mean I daily drive a Detroit locker and didn't drink the tru track koolaide from these forums and couldn't be happier with my choice. I want one in all my stuff. It just depends anthem type of person I suppose.

Now I need to cut up some old coat hangers lol.

Care to elaborate on what the Shop was doing wrong when measuring the height?

Probably measuring to the wrong step on the retainer. Just my guess though.

I need to verify but Brian seemed to be on the money. They were using the little Comp spring checking micrometer to check with the retainers of cours which I saw when I picked up my heads. One style let's the retainer fall too far into it and the other let's it sit on top. They were using the one that has it sit on top thus the low reading. That was the explanation anyhow. Really anybody looking should catch that the mic is not sitting correctly on the retainer but according to Brian he deals with this daily.

I will verify myself like I said when I get a chance. Coat hanger and caliper method lol.

Just install the middle spring & retainer, then measure with your caliper.
