Default Brain dead question on springs and retainers.

So the kids ask what i want for christmass along with the mom and pops. I have been looking into cam a 8.1L sububran..

Anyway i have had a brain fart. on comps page it suggest.

748-16 dual valve spring Retainers.
741-16 Steel valve spring retainers.

911-16 Valve springs.

924-16 Dual valve springs.

Do i need all that.. I thought the turck only had 2 valves per cylinder, so that would be 16 valves. By the look of that above it would make me have way to many parts.... or am i overthinking this..

Told you it was dumb question lol...

Dual springs are designed as an inner and outer spring assembly. The -16 at the end of the part number designates 16 total valves worth of springs. Enough for your 8.1l. The 911-16 is a single spring setup. Choosing between single and dual springs will depend on your cam and intended use.

Hope this helps,

Richard

Richard.. thanks... thats what i thought but for some reason they gave me both part number when i talked to comp, or i misunderstood them.

Im looking to run that HR-270 cam. I talked to them again on monday and this time they recommeded the Behive springs, and differnt retaines. I think im going to go with the steel ones. The titanium i dont see any benifit in as the 8.1 donest do anything after about 5K

Richard CNCed a set of heads for me on a 4.8 nearly 10 years and 80K miles ago and they are still going strong. That was back when the GenIII was first put into the trucks. You can't go wrong with advice from WCCH.

Cool..

You ever done anything to set of 8.1L heads. only company that has anything is rayler but they want $3500 for a set of aluminum one. They said ill same 100 lbs but i dont really care about the weight. i mean its already 8K lbs.

the trick is going to have a whipple on it once i get the rest of the part for the fuel.

There is some performance to be gained from reworking the factory iron 8.1l heads. We've done a few sets recently.
Reworking the stock heads is just the right stuff for a whipple. No need to upgrade to the Raylar heads. Be conservative with your cam choice as you can kill off too much low end torque with too large of a duration cam. The engine will respond to more valve timing and some added lift, however you can over do it without going over 218º duration. With trucks and SUV's rememger the golden rule regarding cams.............."less is more".

I'm tickled to see these heads are still in service. You must have ruined a lot of street rods from a stoplight since then................ Thank you for the nod Allan.

Cheers,

Richard
