99 5.3l engine mods?
#1
I have a 99 silverado z71 with a stock 5.3l I want to do engine mods but I don't know what to do. And i would like to get rid of the governor or rev limiter which ever stops it from going over 100mph. Or set the limits to higher standards that can't be reached.

For me it's not much of a budget as long as my trucks te way I want it I'll be happy. It may take a while but I have no budget necessarily. I want to keep the 5.3 but I'd like to have more performance. Like I have an older chevy also and with those you can get new heads cams better intakes and all that, that make it lighter but are the 5.3s all already aluminum? I want to be able to run 1/4 miles in around 11 or 12 seconds. I'd like it to be quick of the start but still have a lot of top end power.

Should be a iron block, AL heads.
Be careful with wanting to go over 100 mph, if you have a AL driveshaft it will prolly snap/explode. A built steel shaft would be ideal.
Think S/C or turbo to hit 11's and 12's with ease.
And for the tuning route, I prefer HP Tuners and with the 99 you really really want to upgrade the OS to a 01 or 02 as it's much much better than the 99's operating system.

I was thinking about a turbo but not sure yet. And I'm gonna have a custom drive shaft made I can't stand the hollow al one on it. And how would I change the os on it to a newer one? And would forged pistons, better rockers, a cam, bigger injectors, a different intake, and a mad ignition would that do much?

Lots of great advice given !
First , lots of us are making big and bigger power with a stock long block , so save your engine build money for now .
I would first make sure your engine is running / idleing properly first .
Make sure it has good / newer spark plugs/ wires / fresh fuel filter and air filter*
Also Seamfoam your intake manifold to get rid of any oil buildup that could effect your future tuning , you don't want to get false KNock retard from oil in the combustion/intake messing with your tune.
Then you will want a good oil free cold air intake kit , and a good free flowing muffler , then get a custom tune , this will also help your trans to shift firmer and increase pressures to help it live a lil longer . You will def notice a difference with these mods !
Now as you want more you will have to decide what you are going to do
--
1. Stay NA ( naturally aspirated , no blower or turbo)-
You can add long tube headers , cam and larger fuel pump / larger injectors , plus a performance torque converter , your truck will run awesome with the right combo of these parts and a re tune .
2. Blower , you can add a blower , and grow along with it as you can , headers , cam , injectors/ pump , and converter will be supporting mods , along with thinking about swapping in a 4L80e to handle the power . The stock 60e may live at low power levels for a bit but not for long unless you drive like grandpa.
3. Turbo, also need injectors / pump , cam and better transmission like above , but DONT buy headers if you think you'll want to go turbo as you have to buy or make custom hot side exhaust piping/ manifolds to feed/ mount the turbo .
This stuff is just a real quick intro/ map into what choices you have,
You need to decide exactley what you want to use your truck for and the budget you want to spend along with your time .
Any of the above will be great upgrades above stock and when built/ tuned right will drive like stock around town but get nasty when you hit the pedal .
And there is a ton to learn too , as I still am haha
So pick a path and have fun .
