Question 8.1 yukon

I have an 04 yukon xl 2500 8.1 4l85e, besides the tune, intake, and exhaust imthinking i would like to do a mild cam, justnot sure what should or has to go along with it, i have the identical 8.1 siiting in the shed for a project so if i had to i could use the heads from it to get sent out for some minor work, i checked with jegs about a comp cam, and they said minor head work might be required but roller rockers definitly, just looking for some advise

I don't know much about an 8.1 but I wouldn't trust to what I heard from jegs.

jegs races too but take advice with a grain of salt. need to find some guys modding their 8.1s and see what works. not much goin on there cause of the head setup. no way to put carb intake on it and only a couple make performance parts. head are just outrageously priced. good luck with wat ever you decide. its a torque monster

Comp has a handful of cams listed for the 8.1L, but even though none of them are listed at having over 0.513” of lift, the Extreme Energy versions are listed as requiring converting to an adjustable valve-train (hence Jegs telling you that your heads would need machine work).

Extreme Energy cams:
XR258HR 206/212 .510/.510 112deg. operating range of 800 to 4800rpm
XR264HR 212/218 .510/.510 114deg. operating range of 1000 to 5000rpm
XR270HR 218/224 .510/.510 114deg. operating range of 1200 to 5200rpm

Their line of Tri-Power Extreme cams does not mention having to modify your heads for an adjustable valve-train, but I would check with Comp for any additional information.

Tri-Power Extreme cams:
TPX246HR-16 194/206 .500/.493 116deg. operating range of 600 to 4600rpm
TPX254HR-15 202/212 .507/.500 115deg. operating range of 800 to 4800rpm
TPX262HR-14 210/218 .513/.507 114deg. operating range of 1000 to 5000rpm

As the others have said, good luck with your build. It should be a Torque Monster!
