Default 5.3 l33 vs 5.7 ls6

Hey,

I have a 2005 5.3 L33 and and wondering what parts from my L33 would or wouldn't carry over to a 5.7 LS6 block as I'm now wanting to go that route?

I know the main cranks have the same GM #12552216 casting but balanced differently and I would need different pistons/rings.

I think the rods are the same and the heads as well.

Please help with any info.

Everything but the pistons/rings would carry over. Are going the LS1/LS6 (basically the same block) to save weight? If nit, you should consider just having your machine shop bore out the 5.3l bolck to the 5.7l bore. With the money you save you could use forged pistons instead of OEM's and be able to turn up the HP down the road if you decide to go FI or NO2.

Do a search for 5.3l bore or 5.3 to 5.7. There are a bunch of posts on here on that very topic.

Doh! Didn't catch the "L33" the first time. I was refering to over-boring a LM7 iron 5.3l. Thanks for catching that fastgmc53. My bad.

thanks for your replies!

another question...
with the L33/LS6 both having #799 heads are the heads machined any different?

for exampple they both have the same crank number 12552216 but they are machined/ balanced. differently.

and if the heads are the same is it just the hollow valves being different in there?

i asked a few shops about boreing and was told they couldn't bore it being aluminum.

Actually Fastgmc, from what I've heard the cylinder liners in the L33 block are the same as what is in the LS1/LS6 blocks as far as bore goes. It would be worth it for the O.P. to take the block down to his machine shop of choice to have the block liners sonic checked so that he knows the maximum safe bore.

They can bore the liners in the block to a certain amount, see my post above.

The head castings are the same in the places where it matters (combustion chamber shape/size, port volumes and dimensions, and valve diameters) between the 799's and the LS6 heads. The only LS6 heads to get the sodium filled exhuast valves were the 2002-2004 ZO6 corvette heads. The CTS-V heads got standard exhaust valves.

might be right but the LS1 blocks cannot be bored but maybe .010... they have to have new sleeves pressed in. If the sleeve is the same original thickness as LS1's then it could be bored to the 3.898'ish.... I would like to know for sure as that could be a neat build!!

The valves should be a little lighter and in a built motor might reduce valvetrain friction .. free up a few ponies... take some more heat too good for boost but If your doing a mild build then in my opinion not worth the price...
