BTW, what cylinder heads are on that engine? I was planning on running some 317s to help lower compression and I knew that they flow better then the stock 4.8/5.3 heads on the older engines. This information satisfies me now... More cubes is always good, and if I can run less boost and achieve the numbers I want, then I will be very happy. I think I'm going to consider this 3.905" bore with a 4" stroke.
Motor has some fully hand ported 5.3 heads.

Good luck!

What was the compression ratio when the engine was all said and done?

The block will be sonic tested prior to any machine work, and if the machine shop lets me, I will take pictures of the entire process with a full write up to hopefully become sticky'd on this site. That way when a 5.3 to 5.7 question comes up you guys can link the newbies to the sticky.

My brother has done the 5.3 to 5.7. It ran 14.10's with no traction. Here's a link to what he has. 2nd one on page http://www.nelsonperformance.com/customers2.htm

Thumbs up So what if??

You had a 4.8/5.3 block and u kept standard bore and just went
with the 4inch stroke what would the cubes be at that point i think
thats the way too go if possible. JMHO

359ci That would require custom pistons ~$800 vs off the shelf LS1 pistons which would offset the cost of boring which basically means 24 free cubes that many have proven it to be reliable. Of course most would bore the 5.3 anyhow so it would be more like 24 less cubes for $150 more. Not my opinion of a smart investment.

Mahle makes forged pistons for the 4.8/5.3 bore in sizes ranging from + .010-.040" over. I'm not sure on cost yet, I havent looking into purchasing just pistons from them. But I was looking at a rotating assembly that had a eagle forged crank, eagle rods, and any mahle forged piston of customers choice from the mahle catalog, comes with rod/main bearings, and the kit is approx. $1900. I thought that was a pretty good deal and considering I can get any piston out of the catalog for that price, I can build the engine with a 3.905" bore and it would be the same price.

I asked my machinest about what he could get as far as pistons as I have a block at the machine shop right now. From what I was told Mahle Just released some as stock type replacement piston. It is my understanding that no one has a stock, on the shelf replacement piston that is forged for these motors. We were going to get the Kb silvolites wich only are listed up to .040 over bore but he said he could call mahle and see if they have any thing avalible yet. They do and they sale them up to .060 overbore. He should be getting a price sheet sometime next week.

I too was considered doing the 5.3 to 5.7 stock bore, How ever after looking at the cylinder design I am affraid the block might possible be to thin and I dont want to take a chance on this as its going to be a replacement for my DD. If I get another block I will have it sonic checked in front of me and see if we can possible bore it out that much and maintain its reliabilty.
