Default 2001 Z06 Cam install = 30 RWHP

Just get through installing a free 2001 Z06 cam and new 2006 Z06 valve springs (not free but cheap) in my 5.3 liter 2003 Z71. Base line with JBA shorty headers and Cat Back, plus a volant air intake was 236 RWHP. After cam install the RWHP was 266 It was very interesting watching the 275 70 R 16 off road tires at 6000 rpm in third gear. Looked like a top fuel tire at 300 mph. I lost a little power below 3000 rpm, but I think with some road tuning I can get that back. I suspect that my DCR is s bit low becasue that cam was designed for a 10.5 to 1 CR. The truck idles glass smooth. Bottom line: Free cam + a little elbow grease = 30 HP

was your truck tuned before? If it wasn't then that would explain almost all of your gain.

Sorry but your baseline is pretty bad, especially for an 01

It was tuned. Actually, most of the stock Z71 4X4's dyno here in Las Vegas in the low 200's. I suspect that the power loss through the automatic transmission, transfer case, and large tires is significant. Before the cam change I did not have any trouble keeping up with the 300 HP Triton Fords. Additionally, I have not lost any gas mileage. IMHO I think gaining 30 HP with mild cam only is a good thing.

What I'm saying is that gaining 30 rwhp from just a z06 cam is very rare. I don't think I've ever seen someone gain that much from a z06 cam. I guess numbers don't lie though. Nice gains.

I'd like to see a graph as well. I have a feeling that your Volant is what is killing your bottom end.\2 cents\

Default More Z06 cam info

Just got home from work. Thanks for all the replies. I have made several attempts to post the before and after dyno sheets. I will try agian later. The pre (236 HP) and post (266 HP) cam install RWHP are corrected and the A/F ratios are good. I did have one question as to why a volant air intake system would cause a loss of low end power?? I will read the FAQ again about attachments and hopefully I can figure out how to attach the dyno sheets from my pictures??
