Thumbs up '00 Silverado 5.3 Oil Pump Install

Trying to prepare for the up coming head/cam swap. I've used search function and can't find any posts specific to my new oil pump install questions.

I know about using the correct o-ring. Good info.

The questions I have about the pump R&R is do I have to drop the front of the pan in order to access the pickup tube bolts?

Can anybody share learned tricks for removing and re-installing the pickup bolts? Of course I understand from others retrieving dropped bolts from the pan can be a daunting task..lol! plenty on the net about that.

I've heard there may be a trick using replacement bolts, (with washers?), that you tether with a slip knot using fishing string to prevent bolts in oil pan during removal and install?

I've heard the oil pump is the most troublesome part of the whole job.

Thanks for any advice.

Loosen all your perimeter oil pan bolts pretty much as much as you can unthread them with out coming out ( wow what a mouthful lol)

Then you prob still need to take the very front bolts out ( it's been a while )
Stuff a good quality rag under neath the oil pump and pickup tube . This will catch the Pick-up bolt and/or O-ring if you drop it ,

You will need a couple different lenght screwdrivers or pry tools to possibly help pry away the pickup tube from the oil pump , but first unbolt the pump , it will move slightly side to side which will help when trying to wiggle it off the crank and separating the pickup tube .

I like to put a gob of petroleum jelly on the pickup tube and tube inlet off the new pump to help lube and hold new O ring in place .

Just take your time , it's pretty simple , but can be tedious .
Good luck .

Cool , I'm glad to help , but it's been a long time , so hopefully others who have done this more recently can add some tips , but like I said it's not bad just time consuming , so just take your time and you'll be fine

What Tim said. If it were me, I'd drain oil outta pan just in case. A great time would be if it needed an oil change anyway. Food for thought.

Oil is definitely coming down before the work starts. I'll load the front of the pan with lint free rags after I loosen it up. Thanks for the advise. It's always better to be prepared for the worse than to spend time chasing dropped bolts especially from an oil filled pan.
