Default oil thread

what oil are you guys planning to use on your '14? I know 0/20 is recommended but is that what the pros are actually using right now? Anyone done a change yet? I've still got the dealer maint. for 1 more change so I figure it's time to start making a game plan.

Just run 0/20 if GM calls for it. They must build these DI engines tight like a drum.

Or ask ayousef what he recommends.

I looked around today, Mobil 1 and Royal Purple were the only 0/20s at the local place, I'll have to do some looking around.

Walmart doesn't even have it? I've found that is the best place to buy oil and filters

redneck logic kicked in yo! So the factory tells us to run 0/20 however we know better, and since you want my professional advice I guess you could run some petroleum jelly and report back.

Since you seem to consider yourself the end all be all go she's and enlighten us as to what we should all do.

use the factory recommended viscosity and be done with it, unless you're driving your truck with heavy throttle/high rpms for prolonged durations then it wouldn't be a bad idea to switch to a higher viscosity oil by actually reading the measured viscosity ratings at different temperatures rather than going by the viscosity rating printed on the bottle.

For example Mobil1 5w-30 is actually thicker than 10w-40 at high temps, which doesn't necessarily make any sense.

I'd stick to the 0w-20 unless you do a lot of stop and go driving or long distance towing.

Generally you would adjust viscosity based on expected ambient temps in your region, and there are lots of charts showing just that, however GM engineers probably put a lot more thought into it than a basic oil viscosity chart. If the engine was designed to run 0w-20, putting in thicker oil may actually hurt engine life rather than help, unless you're running it under extreme conditions.

Of course, I only have 6 1/4 mile passes on mine, and no around town beatings since then, but I use the same as recommended by GM 0-20, and I have my shift rpm set at 7200, rev limiter at 7400...
