So i normally dont pay attention to these things but im getting ready to pull a trailer from Indy to Memphis with a mini truck on it for a show and was trying to get the truck in tip top shape to do so.. I was tooling trought town in traffic and noticed that the trans temp was getting up near 190, this is with about 95degreeF ambient air temp, and in traffic with the air on and both fans on high.. get going down the road and it drops to 180ish..

Stock Convertor, does have billet 5th gear servo, and corvette 2nd servo.

What is a safe temp for these operating conditions.. Havent checked the fluid level but it also hasnt leaked at all..

below 200 is ok, below 175 is good, above 220 is bad.

 

Normal driving around town is in the 120's 130's
I towed a 24 ft race car trailer to Indy with a Vette in it
Trans temps were in the 150's to 170's in traffic

 

keep the dummy guage below 200 and you're good to go.

 

Thanks guys.. My truck already has the air to fluid aux cooler from the factory, i was tempted to add a BandM cooler that i have sitting around in a box new just for insurance sake..

 

185-190 stock put a cooler itll run 140-155 depending cooler size

 

I had my trans temp up to 225 this last weekend, while climbing the local mountains.

6.2L NHT Package with the trans cooler and it still got that hot.
I have been thinking of upgrading to something aftermarket/bigger.

 

Mine runs 210 8 months out of the year and around 180 the rest of the year. Been doing that for over six years now. I dont drive mine easy, and it sees track time. I have pulled loads, hauled loads, and so far its still hanging in there. Its totally stock with the line pressure bumped up, no shift kit, no servos. It has a little over 152,000 on it now. Fluid and filter has been changed twice.

 

the tranny lines run through the radiator which makes the fluid just as hot as the water/antifreeze. ive never had mine over 185 and that was when it was stock.

 

My tranny saw 210 degrees on the Dyno in 95-100 degree weather.
On the highway at 80mph in 105 degree weather I show around 185 degrees.
I have the factory aux tranny cooler on a stock 4l60e except for increased line pressure and a vette 2nd gear servo.
