Its a good tranny to a certain HP level, if gonna do a tranny swap might as well go 4l80e.

They started making them in 91'. I'd look for anything 94+. 91-93 had a different main plug, and a 93 I picked up didn't have the bosses on the driver side to mount a needed switch. Can't remember what it's called right now.

99+ have the top center bolt that matches the LS blocks. The internal rear feed for fluid was changed in 98. Some say the 97 and older design is better, others say the 98 to newer is better. There were other changes throughout the years, but really any year can work. I'd stick with a 94+ and you're good to go.

I know this is an old thread and I apologize. I'm looking into doing the 80 swap in my 08 4x4 1500. What years do I need to be looking for that will work as far as the 80e? Thanks in advance.

I would run a 2003-up unit. The newer the better as it will less likely need a rebuild. Make sure the dip stick tube and fittings are included at the least. Slip yoke too would be easier on you

I'm desperate here. NNBS running an 80e and the frost harness. I think I just burned up my 80e in the first 1500 miles. I only used HPTuners to remove the codes as they are all available now (not sure if they are actually applied in the tune, dont know what the trans would act like if they didnt apply).

Current tune is attached.

Shifts went from lunging the truck forward to not feeling it shift. When the torque converter is not locked it feels like there is no power getting to the ground. RPM's dont drop much between shifts anymore.

Could it be the torque converter? It's one of the most stout units offered by circle d...
