Got power and ground from the console harness and tapped the feed wire into the existing cargo light wire. There was a how-to floating around.
I also did this except it's on lower dash panel, down kinda by my left knee and I got power from... well not sure right now but it was already fused. I feel it's way more convenient this way, especially while driving at night and checking on load (you can't see out the back window when dark and dome lights on). The way GM did it is pointless, I don't care what excuse you give. The switch I used has a red light on it when it's on, so I don't forget it. And it's not on RAP power so I can use it anytime even with no key or accessories on.

Cargo light wire is white with black stripe in the pink plug pin 2 on BCM.

just stating thats why they did it. Checking your cargo going down the road is a good reason to have a separate switch.

Mine do not come on when the doors are open.. Damn.

There is a dome override button to toggle that function off/on, you might want to check that switch.

Dome Lamp Override - The dome lamp override button is located next to the exterior lamps control.

(Dome Off): Press the button in and the dome lamps remain off when a door is opened. Press the button again to return it to the extended position so that the dome lamps come on when a door is opened.
