Battery relocation jump start?

Battery relocation jump start?
I have my battery mounted in the spare tire location and assumed I would be able to charge or jump start the truck by connecting the + to the distribution block under the hood and the - grounded to a ground. I hooked up a trickle charger like this and it would not work. Will this not work for some reason?

Stupid question maybe, but are you sure you have the + distribution block connected to the battery now that it's in the back?
Also, you said trickle charger so I'm thinking Battery Tender or CTEK, sometimes those take a while to charge. Did you try putting a DMM on the bat to verify that it was/wasn't charging while hooked up?
