What exactly is wrong with it? I know a TON of people that do it with no problems.

The special tool threads into the crank. There is a large nut that then turns on the tool and pushes the pulley onto the crank. This way the threads in the crank are not used to pull it on. All the stress is on the tool.

buy a piece of all thread the size of bolt, a couple large washers and nut the size of the all thread and use that to pull the pulley onto the crank. Heat is a bad thing. Hammers are a no-no on a crankshaft. Longer bolts sometimes bottom out before the pulley is all the way on. There's a reason GM puts a specific length bolt in the engine. The ARP bolt sounds intriguing though $4 for a stock bolt isn't bad at all and the balancer is installed per GM specs. After seeing a few balancers come loose and fall off the crank I fear doing anything other than the stock bolt. How tight are you supposed to tighten the ARP bolt?

ARP bolt is suppose to be 250ft/lbs.

Stock bolt is 37ft/lbs and then an additional 140 degrees of rotation.

i heard 190ft lbs on the ARP
i put a 1/2" wide flat head in the flywheel bottomed it out on the motor. i put my 250ft lbs tq wrench on it an tightened as tight as i could pull it by myself i didnt get 250ft lbs out of it lol
i used liquid wrench on the threads an a lil on the surface of the bolt an pulled it on as tight as possible
