Default 2007 non VVT Avalanche don't race tow or mud just want cam for best MPG

Doing the AFM /DOD delete, cam and lifters were great but 4 pistons had busted skirts one piston had whole side busted out! Anyway trying to get a fuel efficient truck built for grandson. This is his request jack it up and put bigger tires on it of coarse. I want him to have a economy fuel burner because we all see gas prices wanting to jump. What could I put in for a camshaft that would get good power/mpg without the cost of cold air intake and high flow exhaust???? I realize you have to disable/tune out AFM to run better but I do not want to build him a bad slug of a truck---thanks.

Stock or very similar. The larger the cam, the more it will want to drink because of your foot.

The larger and heavier tires will just make it even worse on fuel economy too. Depending on size, a gear ratio change will be wanted to keep your mechanical advantage and retain fuel mileage.

Most of the fuel mileage can be down to driving style and how well the person tuning it does.

I agree with everything you say but I have no idea of where to get specs on OEM cam so that I might match it up to the new cam I would like to install.

Comp XR259HR is a great small cam that can keep fuel economy close to or better than stock.
Nice power increases throughout the whole rpm range.

BTR makes a super similar camshaft as well.

Just know that doing the AFM/DoD will make it really simple to switch the 3 bolt cams. You just need the 3 bolt 4X cam gear that they sell.

See Crane's Powermax and Cam Motion's Drop-In camshafts, they do not require higher lift rated valve springs.

Your stock cam is 193-193 .482-.482 116.

Everything you want to do goes against better MPG.

Sorry, it's just the reality of it.

In my old 5.3, my Comp LSR cam (LSR 265 grind), still managed 20mpg with 4.10s and a 30in tire at 70mph.

I always thought it was a fluke but it was repeatable as long as I kept my foot out of it.

I am going to try the Melling Manufacturer's Part Number: MC1390 Part Type: Camshafts Product Line: Melling Stock Replacement Camshafts Summit Racing Part Number: MEL-MC1390
Cam Style: Hydraulic roller tappet Basic Operating RPM Range: Stock Intake Duration at 050 inch Lift: 193 Exhaust Duration at 050 inch Lift: 193 Duration at 050 inch Lift: 193 int./193 exh. Intake Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.482 in. Exhaust Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.482 in. Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.482 int./0.482 exh. Lobe Separation (degrees): 114 It matches 2007 Avalanche specs perfectly except original cam specs were 116 separation. I am hoping this will match the factory tune for stock vehicle and only thing needed will be a simple dod afm delete for $50 by a tuner. Hopefully this will not require hundreds of dollars of tuning to get truck to run smooth and will result in acceptable gas mileage. Fingers crossed hopefully this will be a good decision on my part because I need the closure! lol

Why don’t you just buy a stock LM7 cam instead of that Melling cam? A low mileage used sticker would be cheaper then the Melling I’m sure
