Default 2007 Avalanche swap to older 5.3l with no AFM

Trying to buy a 2007 Chevy Avalanche that has AFM with major knocking noise and want to install a 5.3 crate engine with no AFM. Can I swap needed components from old motor to crate motor? I hope to use Range Tech AFM disabler. Will the harness wiring need to be modified for such things as cam, map sensors etc? This is for 15yr old grandson so time is not an issue.

You need to stay with a GEN 4 engine to make your life easy.

There are lots of changes from a GEN 3 to GEN 4 engine and computer. The GEN 4 engine has knock sensors on the side of the block, the cam sensor is in the front cover, the crank and cam triggers are 58x/4x instead of 24x/1x on the older engines.

If they sell a GEN 4 engine with AFM/DoD I would that route. Or rebuild the engine in the truck now with a regular 5.3 cam, lifters, pushrods, swap the valley plate and cam gear to a 3 bolt 4x style instead of the single bolt cam gear.

Right, going backwards is more work than just buying another LC9 or LMG or LY5 and dropping it in.

These engines from 2007 through 2009 did not have VVT. The latter versions did but you could remove it as well.

Junk yard LY6 and L96 6.0s may also be plentiful. These would also drop right in but you would want to delete VVT and they do not have AFM.

And if you want to build a rocket, L92, L9H or L94, the 6.2 403 horse motors. But being the boy is 15, keep it tame!

Thanks for the help to both of you. I am a little smarter now and believe we will try to rebuild the motor that is in it, that is if we can get the truck for $1500-$2000. It has 220000 mi on it but appears to be in very good shape. I will put in 1 gen 3 cam and will also need a gear to go with it? I have read a single row chain is needed for cam/crank for clearance to oil pump. I will also need a lower volume gen3 oil pump so as not to over boost oil pressure due to high flow AFM lifters and cam being removed? The cam I will be putting in will have roller lifters or just plain lifters? If I need to get into rods will they be reusable because I thought I saw they are a one time torque on bolts?. Are we doing the right thing by removing AFM? Would installing pistons with full skirts cut down on chance of piston slap? Finally where to buy and what brand of parts is been proven reliable? Thanks it is helpful to get advice when one is lost, don't want to look like a feeble grandpa and no we will not be adding a blower or nitrous oxide! lol thanks

Yuo're welcome! When using a Gen III camshaft in Gen IV engine you use an early 3-bolt Gen IV sprocket (12586481). Keep the superior Gen IV timing chain and keep the Gen IV oil pump. An AFM oil pump moves 1/3 more oil per revolution, the Melling M365 is either stock or an upgrade depending on which engine came with the truck.

These are roller motors, use roller camshafts. Yes, remove completely AFM, hardware and software. Then you'll have Gen III reliability with Gen IV durability!

You will find these very informative:
